Cool. Okay I think I'll be there then. I'd love to meet some new people as long as they're okay with my noob-ishness. And I always have fun skating to class so this won't be much different. Just with lots of company.

Road report, please! Haven't been north of Columbus Circle in a while. What's the paving like uptown these days?

I haven't been uptown either, but the blocks below Times Square are freshpaved!

That's nice . . . as long she and the rest of the 2-wheelers in spandex stay out of our way next Saturday.

    <<edit>>I mis-spoke above - - the Bomb is still schedule for 10/11.<</edit>>

Next Saturday? Still the 11th, no?

Busy next weekend and I'll cry if I miss it.

And yes, totally, bikers in the city are entitled snots. It's "kick the dog." But it freakin' rulz to have someone with the power to pave who appreciates it new and smooth. (Although that stunt she pulled at Times Square and Madison Square with the sandy brown crap sprayed on the street--and it's on the route, so Bombers beware--is bullshit to skate through. Footbreaking on ball bearings.)

Senior moment - - Yes, it is still the 11th.

And yeah - I wondered about that "sandy brown crap". For those who haven't seen it, it's a divide that sets off the the bike lane from the rest of the road, formed out of these little pebbles stuck to the asphalt.

It's part of this big DOT initiative to do "traffic calming" and reclaim street space for pedestrians/other uses than cars. Big for that. But the surface their using is a monumental fail for skaters: it breaks off all the islands and piles up in the bike and traffic lanes right where you need to be thinking about possibly stopping. You could die.

Nsc- I might be able to, I gotta check with the owner of the house I rent a room in to see if he's cool with people crashing on the couches but if so I'll let you know (not in NYC but White plains which is about 30 minutes out- and has gnar skate spots). You're the nick that went to friendly's with me, b-pizz, k-rimes, louis, etc at munnsville, right? You should stay for monday, almost everybody has off since its columbus day so I'm putting together a downhill session that day- got some really rad hills to skate.

and about this stuff separating the bike lanes.... easy solution: ride in the street.

From 92nd down to 70th it's newly paved and smoooth. Not sure uptown of 92nd because I never head uptown. From 70th to Colombus Circle it's rough and bleh. Some cracks and stuff, not awful but kind of a vibrating foot massage for awhile. :P

And I usually avoid Times Square proper and take 8th Ave from Colombus Circle and then cut over by 42nd St, but today I took Broadway all the way to see how it was and the pavement for the first I guess four or five blocks south of Colombus Circle is AWFUL! It's suicide. I can't imagine even a bike can go over it easily. Looks like they chewed up the pavement getting ready to repave. I hope they finish by the 11th.

Thanks, MOH. Too bad about that one stretch. Usually relatively low-traffic there. And downhill.

Yea, that was me at the Friendly's during grav fest. It very well may end up being just me coming down too. But if people are having a skate sesh on monday I'll definitely stay for it. Just let me know what's going on.

But I am familiar with Broadway since I commute on my board down Broadway from 92nd to 23rd five days a week for school....just not quickly. Probably takes me 50 minutes to an hour each way. What I'm asking is would I be so far at the back as to be completely and totally alone for all but the first 50 ft? I'd actually love to see how some skilled riders skate in traffic if I could!
If not I'll just brush up on my skills and try for next year. It's a yearly thing right? I'll definitely be ready by next year. And I live on Broadway so if I don't skate I can pop my head out of my apartment and watch y'all zip by.
I doubt you can go over 20mph on crowded NYC streets, lest you wish to die.

I never skate in heavy traffic, and stay to one side of the road, and I hope everyone else does as well.

    LOL.

I skate in heavy traffic.... A LOT.

Big pointer: Although most of the people at the event are in it for fun, it is still a very dangerous thing to do. It will be great, but DO NOT forget that you are going down a very crowded road with lots of other obstacles for you to navigate around. I would highly recommend a helmet.

Holy crap! That's one hell of a tackle! I can't believe the cyclist didn't get a massive concussion. So.......is this why we're supposed to wear helmets on the Broadway Bomb?
