2nd on the pool king
you COULD get a single kick board like an alva or hosoi and have lots of fun... you could also not (emphasis on dont do this)
simply because i like having a regular deck with two kicks.. much more verstatile than something that doesnt even have a proper nose to stall on coming out fakie or the like
just get a regular nice wide popsicle of the brand of your choosing (i like enjoi a lot)
throw some indys and rainskate wheels on there and thrash it up,
and youre also set to do regular type street skating should you desire to do so and will have much more fun in the parks
pool/ramp specific boards usually more drastic sized tails and nose so you can grab them easily

Re: Thinking about getting into this...
you could also try an EW drifter or corchia.

Re: Thinking about getting into this...
yea i REALLY dont want a popsicle board. i want a pretty wide one with a bigger kick on the tail than on the nose. thats why i was lookingat santa cruz. the alvas are too expensive for me, pool kings were al right, kosoi were too popsicle-esque. i guess im pretty picky. any other brands?

Re: Thinking about getting into this...
check out the black label pool decks they have some pretty sick boards that have square kick tails with a smaller pointed nose

pool board noses are subtantially smaller for a reason. of course popsicles are perfectly fine if you like it like that, but if you're stalling often enough to need a bigger nose, you should be riding in a halfpipe, not a bowl. watch some real bowl riding and it's pretty much constant motion with the same foot forward and your back foot on a big fat tail.
anyway
i like my bigfoot drifter for pool riding, but that's just cause i like the size and heft. hitting air with a weightier board is just so satisfying.

Give the Flounder by BC Longboards a look! It has a kick tail, and a small kick on the nose as well. Great board for pool, park, and ditch skating, as well as being versatile enough to slide. It now comes stock with retro zigzags instead of the "no name" urethane!

Re: Thinking about getting into this...
JP38'' for $40, deck only.. can't beat that. board will kill pools and parks, and is great for sliding.

Dude, if you are from Eugene you should check out the Oregon manufacturers most of whom press their boards in state.
Cal's shop brand is pressed in Portland by M&M and are super good deals:
Portland, Oregon Decks - Cal Skate Skateboards
Check out their rant on the origins of the "crown" logo:
Cold War Ordnance
Great variety of shapes both single and double ended:
rebel skates
PS - If you find any empty pools in the Eugene/Springfield area immediately PM me the address and don't tell anyone else! 8)

No, they are more of a slolam specific wheel, just letting you know that's what comes on it instead of the wheels in the pic.

Re: Thinking about getting into this...
i can recommend gravity PS36
it has a modern shape but its much bigger so you feel more stable riding transitions or sliding on it

Eric Meyers, I believe his name is, is still doing the Cascadia Longboard presses during Saturday Market, if you're going for the whole "local" thing. He takes trades too, if ya dig. He does all sorts of customs, I had him do a custom stealie deck back in '07 for like $75, turned out great.. Even though it's sole purpose is wall art. And EC, I do know of 1 pool in the Eug area, but I have to check with a homie to see if I can disclose the location to a grumpy old man like yourself... But I doubt he'd mind.
