Heres what i got, now what?
I have a loaded dervish fllex 2 with some paris coltons, 75 mm durian wheels riding the trucks super looseeee.
i want to start riding parks and bowls. i need pads and a helmet.i watched the dropping in without a tail video by Pilloni.
where to begin? what are realistic goals for soemone new to bowls. on a shortboard i can only pump my way to the coping and ride down switch and what not. so any help / tips / advice would be awesome. i want to get to a point where i can just hit the speed pockets in the bowl and surf in circles ;D

Re: Heres what i got, now what?

seriously... get a deck made so that you can kickturn in the pool. try something by Gravity, Pool Kings, Old Man Army, Powell, or comet and others, strap some indy of trackers on there with some Rainskates, powell, earthwing, and many others.
you can use the dervish, but dont plan on having fun time after time, especially at a crowded park, where if you arent maneuverable, you will be disliked.

Re: Heres what i got, now what?
haha, dervish is not ideal for bowls, trust me.
You might wanna learn how to do stand-up slides, because you got durians, maybe some board dancing and tricks as well. Try to stay away from bowls.
I got lots of boards. I ride them a lot. I enjoy Longboarding. tee hee you found me

the whittier park is dead, in the morning. or people to busy gettin a little high. thats why i plan to start there, learn the basics and when i get a new board more adapted to pools. i just mainly love that surf look those huge wraps on overs and hitting speed pockets. i dont like getting in the way ill just go when the parks are dead :]

Come on guys, lighten up, he just wants to skate.
I don't ride bowls but I'd suggest trying to find/befriend people in your area that do. That way you might be able to borrow their setups, or at least get some pointers.

But if you did, I bet no one would tell you to #### off & get a different board. As long as you're there to have fun and not hurting anyone else I say skate what you want

Re: Heres what i got, now what?
xsx304 Don't listen to everything you hear, history was never made by going with the grain. I ride my Dervish in pools (Flex 2, Randall 180's, Durians) and truly don't know why it is made into such a big deal. You will get looks...but as you skate there more and more people will chill. Some will even...gasp...be sparked by your passion.
The park I mainly ride has a roll-in bowl, I'd start there or start in the flat of a bowl. The trick is you turn with your front foot (not kick turn the back). Hit the wall in the rounding sections and pump into and along it. Once you start learning this and how to turn the thing off the wall you can start to understand how to pump the board along the wall for longer periods to keep your speed up. Find very spacious pools around 8' high on the walls or less. I have found figure 8 shaped pools seem to work best for me. To learn that drop-in I'd start at about 4' just to be safe. I have never done this due to all of the roll-ins around here. Trying to pump the bowl back and fourth will feel very strange at first but in a bigger pool this will get you enough speed if you are not dropping in yet. The key to it all is in the weight of your front foot. When you are on the walls do "micro-pumps" along them and you will feel the speed start to come to you and understand my above rambling. Oh, and if your parks have snake runs...the Dervish will love those!
Now get out to the park, have fun and spread the stoke...even if others don't.
Rayne rocks it out...Just sayin'...

ok hamslap, i never told anyone to f-off, nor did i have jack to say about the particular brand of board or whatever. i can hammer a nail with the side of a monkey wrench, hell its my right as a human being. but i dont really want to now do i?
what you imply there is not really what i meant. why not make it easier, by using a suitable tool for the job. thats what i was saying.

To stick with your metaphor, he had already said that he does in fact want to try hammering a nail with a monkey wrench, as it is the only tool he has. And it had already been made very clear that a dervish/monkey wrench is not ideal.
So I'm sorry if I misunderstood you, I guess I inferred too much because I assumed you weren't making the exact same point that had already been made by several people. My fault. I feel like a total hamslap right now
Ooh boy silverfish is a strange place. I would have thought a bunch of longboarders would be a little more chilled out.

Re: Heres what i got, now what?
The Dervish is a great pool board. Not the wrong tool, just a different tool. Hahaha; something like a socket wrench or an open ended wrench, both work equal...sometimes you want one, sometimes you want the other...

Re: Heres what i got, now what?
hey - i tried riding a longboard at the bowl the other day and had a blast. it had no kicktail which i found made pumping easier - i was flying around. the only downside is the mega wheelbase, which makes tight turns quite hazardous. otherwise, pretty cool board. I still prefer my board - a skaterbuilt 12' pig with 16' wb, but the longboard experience was fun.
enjoy

Re: Heres what i got, now what?
Heres an update. at the park i skate i now can roll into the bowl and generate some good speed on my dervish. what tricks are cool. is it possible to do those 180 diagol up slides on a board this big? ive been playing around in the bowl as well on my short board but compared to the derv its so light that its real easy to over slide it and screw up. not sure what else can be done witht his type of board. guess just pump around like ive been. its pretty awesome. guess i gotta learn to drop in on a kick tail board now to do anything crazy.
