    Default New to Pool/Ditch Skating

Hey people, I Speedboard and I've been seeing loads of Pool riding videos more and more and finally gost interested when I discovered a couple of places that are perfect for Pool and Ditching, so I was looking at some boards.. That's the setup I found, is it a good one? Other good options are welcome, thanks!

    Deck: Earthwing Thruster

Trucks: Independent 215s (Common ones or hybrids?)

Wheels: BDS Dragons (Never herad of those, any better ones?)

No idea if this setup is good, I would appreciate any other options. Oh, I got some risers already, just wanna know if I have to set 'em up with the tallest side to the inside or to the outside of the board, thanks!

the bds wheels are sideset, so those plus the 215's will be very wide.

    Yeah.. So any other option?

What about the possibility of a mini for this discipline? Something not so small like a Grenade 23 but not so big.. ?

Personally, I would just get a regular double kicktail board to learn on. Check out Main > Skateboard Decks - Old School Skaters Online

They have a lot of boards with different shapes to give u an idea of other possibilities.

I skate a regular 8" double kick with Ace 33 trucks and soft spitfires for bowls and stuff.

Killing set-up and on sale while supplies last:

GRAVITY SKATEBOARDS | DARIN "COOKIEHEAD" JENKINS 32

I'd take off the angled risers that come with this complete just because I like a lower ride and Orions turn so sweet you won't need them (they turn more than Indy, less than ACE, and by the great folks at Tracker so they're high quality made in the USA). The wheels are Gravity Snaps; super park/street wheels but maybe a tad sharp for ditches. Although I'm fine with them on rougher stuff.

And write "Army sent me" in the comments box on the order form for some extra goodies too.

But whatever make you go with I'd suggest narrower trucks and somewhat smaller wheels; I think it best to keep everything lower and tucked under the wood. You don't what to be riding too high or fighting wheel bite with bigger wheels.

    Cheers- Army

So, basically it looks like a common street skating board.. What's different about it?

And a Pool board is like a common skateboard except you use it for Pool Skating? I only found common skateboards on oldschoolskater.com.. There are 103 pages so, is any model good you'd recomend for what I want?

The main difference I think you'll want to look for in a modern pool board is that all important extra inch or so of wheel base and width. You're typical common street flipper board will only run about 7.5" wide with a wheel base about 14" or so. But keep in mind allot of today's advanced pool/bowl/ramp skating is centered around doing stuff switch so the modern pool boards have less wheel base (around 15") and the same double ended kick as flippers.

But if you're more down for the OG classic dropped back knee drive-with-the-front-foot surf style of riding you might look into a classic shape like the Pool 35 (I got one of these for Dan Wilkes not long ago if that tells you anything):

GRAVITY SKATEBOARDS | POOL MODEL 35

You could also look into reissue and classic decks from Powell, Cockfight, Santa Cruz, Zorlac, etc,

    Hope that helps? -Army

Yes that helps a lot! I was looking for an Oldschool board rather than a double ended kick. Gonna look forward to buy one of those.. I still get the extra stuff if I say you recomended me?

Just one more thing, with and old school board that has kicktail only, I will have to do a 180º on edges?

    Thanks

And sorry I'm a little slow on the uptake and I'm not sure I understand the "180 degree on edges?" question...

Also, 99% of all pool boards, even the classic shapes will have enough nose to qualify as a kicktail. The real difference is in wheel base and hence the way you stand on and ride them:

New School double kick you stand more "bolts" meaning you ride with the rear foot closer to the rear truck in the pocket of the kicktail, and the front foot over the front truck and even in the pocket of the nose. This stance allows the skater to ride both directions (switch) with more equal control.

Classic or old school shapes you stand with the rear foot on the tail and the front foot more behind the front trucks. This stance allows the skater to weight the front foot and gives much more solid control, but only going forward (surf style)... Back in the day it was "Fakie" rather than switch and thought of as going backwards rather than just going the opposite direction.
Here, what Tony Alva does in 1:34. Like he does that instead of just going Goofy and coming back regular, know what I mean?

And I look forward to buy this board, I liked it! 35" Pool Model, I plan to buy a complete, with Orions as you said, but which wheels from those available should I get?

    I didn't see a attached video. But I'm thinking you're talking about a kickturn?

Were you're starting out some I'd go with the "66mm Ice White" they'll make the board ride just a tad high, but it's a great trade-off for a smoother, faster (less work pumping), and grippier ride while you're still getting your bowl legs. The 62mm snaps are the perfect size, but they slide REAL good. Which is great after you're dialed. Not so great while you're learning.

Also, on the Orion trucks: they were the King Doo-doo flipper truck for awhile back in the mid-90's and even though they're great turners, the mid-90's flip guys weren't much for turning and tended to ride they're trucks as stiff as they could go. Hence, Orions still come stock with some way-too-hard bushings that I strongly suggest you replace as soon as possible with some nice soft white khiro's or other such make. (Orions take a barrel/cone.)

    Cheers! Army

I think you're looking at Mr.Alva pulling a frontside grind in a backyard pool. You might have to work up to that one some!
