My board usually rolls over things and it is bouncy so usually if i see a obstacle i go really fast and jump off my board and land when it is over the obstacle. In case you have huge wheels and can't ollie that's what i do

i remember being a little kid with my first real skateboard, i read instructions in books on how to ollie, and i stood still on the street with my board, hopelessly kicking up the board.
i remember crying at one point because i was unable to even get the board a millimeter of the ground.

However i did eventually learn, don't remember exactly how or when, remember getting the board just a wee bit of the ground, and eventually i could ollie up sidewalks and ****.

Ollie is really a great thing to learn, so nice just being able to ollie up a sidewalk instead of doing a bonless or whatever, and its so fun too! olliyng down stairs and over gaps is amazingly fun.

keep trying everybody, its worth it!

You can do it! Just keep practicing and don't let it frustrate you. If you're having a bad time, come back to it later.

It took me like 8 years (started skating when I was seven). I skated for awhile then gave up, came back again, gave up.
Eventually after several cycles of this, I got it and it was marvelous.

I can even ollie my Hightailer now.
Too many boards. Still love my Hightailer.

I've asked in SF for this model in other threads, but maybe you guys know it better:
Somebody tried the Santa Cruz Mini Haka (or PBR Cold one)
->Santa Cruz: Cruzer: 7.9inx31.1in PBC PBR Cold One Cruzer
I know they'r called "cruizers", but wouldn't be good for parks and small pools too? Any opinions?

    Thank you guys!

Learn it. For me, the ollie is the greatest skateboarding trick ever. The feeling of not picking up your board when going up/down a curb or going over something is really amazing. I don't really longboard but i love to cruise around on my regular skateboard with soft 59mm wheels and ollie over stuff, cracks, curbs etc. It's totally "learn-able" it just depends on how interested you are in learning it. It is not easy to learn but definitely possible. I remember the first time i was trying to learn how to ollie (that was 15 years ago) i was going at it for like 2 months practicing stationary and sometimes rolling without any considerable results. Then one day it clicked. You just have to keep going at it till it gets into your head.

I can ollie, but they don't float in the air long enough to jump over obstacles (unless I'm going super fast). They're relatively high, but they just don't stay in the air.

bend your legs directly after it pops up, alot, that way the board is allowed to get higher, and keep bending your legs until you land, you'll fly longer.

Ima trade myself a hightailer soon, see if i can ollie it.

It took me 10 years to learn how to ollie. 9.5 of those years I had people telling me to drag my front foot, stand on the balls on your feet, put your foot behind the bolts blah blah blah.

It's not rocket science. Just kick the board up and jump with it. All the explaining people try and do about what physically goes on its stupid and pointless. When you learned how to walk and run you didn't read a text book and focus on your body weight, you just followed your instincts; do the same with learning this trick. Once you get the ollie, then go right ahead and over analyze every movement you make.

    Good post.
You have to jump. With your body. Most people trying and failing ollies are just trying to manipulate their board off the ground without moving their upper body at all. It makes no sense.

For sure! If you slap the tail down and jump, both you and your board are going to go into the air no matter what, everything else, the drag and the leveling out, is just controlling the ollie so the board stays under your feet.

This. It looks quite hard when you are small, i was so frustrated when I was young and I couldn't get my board off the ground. Now, 16 years later it's a second nature. Keep trying, even if you have to try a hundred times, eventually your board will take off.

This^^^ What i tried to think of, when I first started working on getting higher, was to bring my feet up to my ass. It worked.

I've been skating for about 3 years and just got back into it about three months ago. And I never used to be able to ollie until about just over a month ago. What worked for me was to practise in the grass which will force you to "OVER exaggerate" the pop and the overall motion. Since the grass is much softer than the pavement, it'll become muscle memory to pop much harder and faster once you move back onto the pavement.

    Hope this helped

It'd be a strange community that would disparage someone for using a tool that can "truly" improve one's skills. That said, there are a lot of stupid, gimmicky knick knacks being sold. Finally, what the heck is that you put on the board?
