Happened to a friend of mine and he was upset.
I try to skate during the week when it's an older crowd, by older I mean over 12 or 13. It's also less crowded.
If they call me sir, I'll have to show them how skate with style.

I got called "mister" once by a 7 year old. Older kids, 10 and up, just say "yo" or "dude"
What did happen once when I was skating in the Netherlands was that I was standing up on the mini ramp platform next to a 12-year old skater dude, and he looked up at me, then looked down at my Powell Peralta old school ripper with orange thin ribs and a pink tailbone, then looked back up at me and asked "Did you get that at intertoys?"
Intertoys is equivalent to Toys'r'us in the US, a basic kids toy store. So I thought it was a diss. But the kid looked genuinely interested so I explained that it's a a remake of the Ripper made in 1983, he said "really? thats a long time ago" And just when I was about to tell him more, he interrupted me "I'll google it" and dropped in.
Kids are cool, and smart little !@4#-ers. I stood there for two minutes and laughed inside, then dropped in too.

yeah its kind of reality check as to how old i really am even though still think and feel like i am 20.
whats hard is us old dudes just wanna chill and have fun,the other day on here i saw a kid from my area not 5 miles from me posted,so i sent him a pm asking if he wanted to skate a 5 story empty garage i have had all to myself for months. i told him he could bring a friend if he wanted "this way he wouldn't feel weird-ed out by some stranger ' and he could use my boards if he wanted.
i mentioned that i am 40 and married.
later that night i was watching a movie on john gacy" the freak that killed all those boys" and was thinking the poor kid i emailed probably just thought i was some pschyo that wanted to get him in a dark garage.

pete..Having a board doesn't make you a longboarder-riding it does.
Hey guy's, I know being called sir can make you feel old but at least the kids are being respectfull and not little punks trying to knock you down for being older.
Don't take it as an insult, take it as an oportunity to have a younger dude look up to you as an inspiration that he could still be shredding at 40+. maybe it will motivate them more and you'll have much to show them.
Show them that old school style and they can mix it with their new ISH!
Keep riding, stay stoked, Inspire the youth!

Hillarious post. Yeah, it makes me wonder where the time's gone. Sir? Seriously? Even worse is being called "officer" by the weed slingers on the block. This was especially disconcerting back in the days when I wanted to procure a bag of their wares.
It's not an issue for me, I'm sure a lot of the 30+ guys feel sort of conscious about it. I know a lot of the younger kids seem to feel nervous around the adults. I understand it too. There was one pretty cool kid at landsdowne (other than TheMann) who seems to be constantly stoked and willing to talk.

I try and refer to all strangers as "sir".... It really is a lost respect for people that you don't find to often any more. Its a shame.
I try not to be formal in an informal situation like a skate park, but I try to polite and treat everyone the same, younger or older. I think that the big thing is being polite and courteous.

Valid point, I hadn't looked at it from that perspective.... However I think its more the delivery of the word than the word itself.

Yeah, I got a little of that vibe from a guy (18 ) in my neighborhood when I first started skating three months ago. We skate together regularly now.

Sir, Dude, Yo... whatever. Not sure why that would bother someone, unless it had disrespected intended. I can't hear what the kids are saying anyway, cause I ride with my Ipod blasting. I just stay out of their way, cause I am an old dorky noob, but mostly I get positive feedback from the other skaters, it helps to observe skatepark ettiquite (yeild to the better skaters and give em props when they land a good one, he he).
I like giving the skate-geezers of the world space in a park. I'm always happy to see people willing to break expectation. So many adults are afraid to have fun, it's cool seeing people skate and damn what others think of them.

what place did you skated when you was in holland?
i never say to somebody sir or something, but i never skate with 30+ people. When im at a park they always say Hey, look that guys got a cityskateboard. When i tell them its a longboard they say Yes i knew that.

I skated the Skatepark at Blaak in Rotterdam, Everland I think it's called in Amsterdam-Noord, some of the smaller outdoor parks that can be found in the parks and neighboorhoods in Amsterdam, the Hague and Rotterdam and the city when all the stores are closed. Nobody is there and the architecture is sweet.
Oh yea, Stainless Steel ramps + leaves + water = slippery slamming fun, be careful.
