So I posted on here a few days ago about building a wooden bowl in my basement and got a good lead. Today, I have some more general questions that many of you will probably have some good advice on.
What I am wondering is how tall to make the bowl. From floor to ceiling, my basement is 8' tall. I was thinking 3' tall (2'6" of transition and 6" of vert), which would only leave about 5' of head clearance, which I realize isn't a lot. FYI, I was planning a size of around 14' x 18'. However, I was thinking that for most tricks, you are bent or crouched some, so hitting your head shouldn't be too much of an issue, but I realize that will limit what can be done on it.
I am just really getting into pool and park skating and am not quite hitting the coping yet, but the summer is just starting and I ride a lot, so I would think I will progress to that point before having the bowl built.
Given the height dimensions being discussed here, what do you more experienced riders think of it? Do the pros outweight the cons in terms of ridability? Will I be able to more tricks than not in it? In short, am I crazy for thinking of building such a thing and just do a mimi half, or could this be something really worth doing?
Please feel free to offer any suggestions about size, height, etc. Thanks in advance for everyone's help on this!

That would be way too tight for me. Honestly, I can't see it.
Although everything I do requires a fair bit of speed. Some of the newer school guys may want to chime in.
Seriously you could make something tiny, like a 3 foot transition mini. But think it over, a person that is 6' tall rides up a 3' transition, now they are hitting the ceiling. So about 3' or 3'.5" or abouts if you remind people to duck.
As an example, the music will give you nightmares.

Hey Krayola,
The video you posted is no longer available according to YouTube. I know it wouldn't let you do certain things, but I after getting into skating again, I cannot stand the thought of not getting to ride all winter. I know the bowl idea probably seems crazy/stupid to a lot of people, but I love to carve in bowls/pools and figured something like this would allow that. I mean, I would settle for a mini ramp, but it just seems limiting to me.
..I don't know, hopefully some more people will post in this thread and give me some more to think about.
Thanks,
CC

Just search Youtube for 'mini ramp basement' you'll find vids. For building it's all based on head room. you're just going to have to build one transition and ride it, you hit your head then you know it's to tall. Wear a helmet.
And I know your pain, lived back East and when it snowed no skating or get out a broom and a shovel to dig out some snow and ice.

Krayola,
Yep, it is going to be trial and error for sure. Yeah, it must be nice to live in SoCal. The other older guy I skate with around here just got back from a week there and got to skate some good parks, see the inside of the old Zephyr shop and took a ride down Bicknel hill. I told him when I have the $ we are going back and going to hit Revere, Kenter, etc. Which of the schools in the area is the best one to hit? Is getting run off much of an issue?
Ah, gotta get back to work...
