Default Backyard Ramp, need advice

I'm building a ramp. It is 5' high on one side, on the other side it's 5'6" and 4'. The tranny is 7'6", it's 16' wide and has 12' of flat. Do you guys think there is going to be too much flat?

Looks perfect. When in doubt, more flat is usually a good call.

Also, why not just do the whole thing at 5'?

Gives me variety. The 4' part will be cool to learn stuff on, the taller part where the deck is a little more speed dropping in. The other side is wide enough to enjoy. I want to put concrete coping on the tall part as well, not sure if it's worth the trouble of making my own and I don't know anywhere reasonable to by coping blocks though.

Not at that size...if it was 3 feet tall or more mellow then yes...but that will work quite well...Skating something with short flat is rough because your setup time between tricks is too short...

Thanks, you guys are probably right. I sometimes go skate a ramp in Georgia that is near this size, and it's perfect. But looking at the frame, especially standing on top and looking down it seems like a long ways apart. I guess when I surface it things will appear normal.

I built a 4' ramp with only 6' of flat. Bad call.

For coping, perhaps try a pool supply place.

12' of flat is fair for a 7',5" transition.

Way too much! You need to figure out what you want and can build first. Draw up basic plans and a cut list. Check out rampplans.org, there is a lot of good stuff on there. Are you building outdoors or in? That makes a lot of difference as you don't need treated lumber inside. I guess a ramp like mine could be built from 1400-2000 depending on material cost, but you could build a small 8' wide mini for 300 easily. Make sure you can get away with it though, neighbors and codes can suck. I live out the country on farmland so have no worries.

I disagree about the flat. When in doubt go shorter. You really dont need any. I think youd be good with 8 to 9 feet.
Ours is 8 tall with no flat. People that hate cant skate. and skating is about adapting.
anyway you do it your gonna have a shitton of fun

Its cool your changing up the heights. It will keep you learning new stuff. Gives you more options.

As for concrete coping you should definatly put some on there. There are plenty of plans around the net to do it yourself. If you want to buy some I have a great source from a hillbilly in arkansas.

I think I've been scoping your ramp on flikr.

Yeah I have a flickr page also. I have seen your ramp in videos as well, one that sniffleless posted on another forum.
I am going to try to pour my own concrete. 10% of the reason I decided to is that I want it, 90% that I wasn't going to do it because it sounded like a chore, and I like challenges when building stuff. Hell building this thing is as much fun as skating it is going to be, I have to have projects or I go nuts, which is why I make my own decks also.
