Default SKATERBUILT vs. POOL KING vs. SMA - Which brand do you prefer?

Looking to buy a board from one of these three brands - specifically the Skaterbuilt Trim Delux II, Pool King Jeff Tatum Resurrection or the SMA 38 Special. I'm leaning toward the SB TD II based on another poster's helpful advice as well as the perceived quality of the Skaterbuilt decks. Spoke with the owner on the phone, too - nice guy.

Are the Pool King and SMA decks as well made as the SB? I'm going to use it mostly for cruising around and like the length and wb of the Pool King @ 42" however.

Any advice/recommendations will be appreciated. Thanks.

Just did a search - scratch the Pool King decks - another poster did a review and found that they were poor quality (cheap wood he wrote).

Skaterbuilt has all positive ratings for quality. Only other brand that came up that even approached the quality of SB was Deckcrafters - I'll have to check if they build a longboard.

Was their ever a Skaterbuilt Trim Deluxe I ? Or was the model always called the Trim Deluxe II ?

Would the Bennett 6.0 be too wide for a SB TD II (use the 5.0 instead)? If I use a 1/2" riser and/or wedges can I use a 70MM wheel or am I limited to a 65mm / 66mm as the largest in order to avoid wheel bite?

Thanks again.

Poor quality eh? Was that just one review? I've always loved the Tatum boards.

I've been very happy with my Pool Pirate board (logo notwithstanding), and have trouble understanding how anyone would complain of the quality... I've only read positive reviews of my board online...not sure about their longboards.

BuckWyld - That's the one I was referencing. I'm still going for a Skaterbuilt - don't want to chance a Pool King. Anyone have any feedback on whether there was a SB Trim Deluxe I? Also Bennett 6.0 vs 5.0 for that deck? And are 70mm too large for the board (wheelbite)? Thanks.

Grippins are a good centerset 70mm wheel.
On old 80's Indy 169's the wheels outside edges
are at 9.5".

I've got a Skaterbuilt slalom deck, first rate build & finish.

One of my pals from another forum did a post on the Pool King board (the 10 inch green one that you can order the special Trackers with). He said it was great.

To the point, I'd go with whatever suits you best. Really look at size, concave, plies, stiffness, and just make a conclusion of which one is best.
As for the trucks, I'd preferebly have a perfect matching truck, and if not available, the shorter truck. I don't like to see my wheels stick out over the edges of the deck... But that's just personal preferance.

Cheers!

With regard to your mention of Deckcrafters, I've found their wood to be superb.

As is Skaterbuilt. The SMA would likely be flexy.

If, based on this discussion, you thought about looking beyond the 3 decks you originally mentioned, you are doing yourself a disservice by not taking a few minutes to consider >Cold War<.

The Park Bomb I picked up from them is a real solid performer.

There was a TD I model; discontinued a couple years back. Basically the same plan shape as the TD II except it had a very pointy nose and was a touch longer. A while back, I wrote Hegstrom an e-mail asking if he was ever going to re-issue the TD I to which he responded, due to safety concerns with the nose, it wouldn't be very likely. Damn shame 'cause that shape kicked.

C'mon Dave! The Killers are pointy and so is the Groundhog! Anyway...

I have several Skaterbuilt decks (slalom and park/pool decks). I think they are a great product. Never had any twist problems, consistant quality, nice cave and built to last.
