Re: official photography thread
Can someone help me out? Which would be better for a beginner photographer, a nikon d40 or d40x? Or if you could recommend and others that are priced about the same. I want something that will last a long time and takes good photos.

honestly, get an old film camera.
i started with my teachers nikon f1....it teaches you to be patient and you can even develope them yourself if you have access to a lab(your school maybe)
do an ebay search for canon ae-1....itll be a hell of a lot cheaper than a digital and in the end it will most likely make you a better photographer.
my 2 cents

I have a Nikon D40 and i have never had a thing wrong with it, it is tough and can take great photos, i would not go for the d40x for a beginner camera, it is a lot more expensive and for your your first DSLR theres no need to pay the extra cash.

I already have a nice film camera, but I want a dslr. I'm getting sick of paying to get film developed and the time it takes. I know how to develope it myself but thats not an option.

But if it would be better in the long run I would be ok spending more.

But it won't be better in the long run. In the long run it would be better to take the extra two or three hundred dollars and plunk it down for a nice lens.
I've been in this thread for 10 minutes and my gut is already starting to wrench. Photo forums and threads make me sick...because usually the people who post the most shoot the least.

Thats all I wanted to know. I'm new and I just wanted some input from some people with more experience.

I got a really good deal on a d40 today.
I got second $199 lens for $50,a free bag, and a free tripod. I'm about to go out and take some pictures as soon as the battery is charged.

Re: official photography thread
I'm no photo gear whore; but I just passed 10,000 photos on my Canon Digital Rebel XTi and have been pretty happy with it. The crop factor sucks and is the only reason I'd upgrade; but you can get damned nice photos out of the thing if you know how to use it. I make fairly large prints (11"x16.5" on 13x19 paper) and they'd be fine for framing.
Here's something I shot last weekend with the $85 50mm F/1.8 lens (which I dropped, broke, and snapped back together a couple weeks ago). The detail is better when it's larger--you can see all the individual strands of hair.
