I shoot clear sharp jpeg basics. Print em at 12x18 right out of the camera. That's convenience.

Uh, yeah. Ken Rockwell isn't exactly an authority on what makes good photography. He clearly knows how to expose an image; but his pictures are the farthest thing from subtle I've ever seen. He's not an artist, he's an engineer.
This guy's really impaling himself on two peoples' dicks: David LaChapelle (atrociously oversaturated colors) and Ansel Adams (super dramatic landscapes at F/64).
David LaChapelle's work is generally regarded as hideous and shlocky. You won't see it in a major museum. Ever.
Ansel Adams is cool and all; but he was all about his gear; inventing the Zone system, writing 10 books on technique, and shooting large-format film at about 45mp.
That other professional guy who he says is "one of the world's best photographers" should probably chill out with the national geographic calendar picture steez.
But whatever. This is like arguing about whether or not someone "needs" precision trucks. Good tools will make old things easier and new things possible; but they won't do the job for you.

He is both. And to hell with subtlety.

You're being rude.
LaChapelle has got an incredible imagination and the balls to put it together. Enough said.
Adams was not all about his gear. He missed the births of two of his children because he was waiting for a perfect photograph. He's the one who coined the quote "the single most important component of a camera is the twelve inches behind it", and you call him a gear whore? I think there's a role reversal here. Adams got every ounce of potential out of his gear and made pictures neither of us could hope to create. You shouldn't bash him because he's making your life a whole lot easier right now. Adams' work was ground breaking.

Again, don't throw a hissy fit because he's so incredible. National Geographic calendars are awesome. Taken by the top guys in the world.

Then what will?
You seem to constantly be blaming your equipment rather than yourself.

Re: official photography thread
This is super lame. Equipment is not everything; but it's not nothing. There's a space in between. Buying a 4x5 view camera and a bunch of fancy flashes and meters or whatever won't make you into Ansel Adams. At the same times, you wouldn't get an Adams with a coolpix point 'n' shoot printed directly from the camera in JPG basic. These two concepts are not mutually exclusive.
Put in skate terms, Maguns won't make you skate as fast as K-Rimes; but the stability of Maguns allows Kevin to skate faster.
I don't blame my equipment for anything. I'm quite happy with my pictures, thank you.
Here's a picture of my two friends. They're super in love with each other; so I took their picture together on Sunday.

"low-rez" isn't what you mean, the words you're looking for are "out of focus".

I especially enjoyed the bit about how the shots in "A $150 vs. a $5000 Camera" have equal sharpness, as you're never going to get better than 72dpi from screen. Lolersaurus Rex.

Re: official photography thread
ok guys, could we spend more time posting pictures and less time talking about equipment and criticizing other people work. just because something is not your style doesnt mean its bad. also, i would like to restate dont talk about equipment unless youre wondering what someone is using. its like riding, you could ride a krown board and rock it while someone could suck on a wefunk. i meant for this thread to be a cool place for cool pictures, where someone could come to relax, not to see people battling or saying someones work is bad.
