Re: official photography thread
Bad day (Wednesday)..my lap top crapped on me.
Good Day (Saturday) I picked up a 5D Mark II w/24-70/2.8L and a 50/1.4mm lens.
Thankfully I have a desktop computer as back up. (Though my 16 yr old son is always on it for porn instead of homework. He is sooo my son)

Sweet. The 5D Mk II is easily the best camera for the money, even if money is no object... shame it's a canon and I just don't get on with canon controls at all.
Just wait till the d700x and we'll have everything the 5D has but with better ergonomics

Re: official photography thread
The Mark 2 is the shit and the urine. With a 16gb card it's like a medium format camera with a 1,500-shot roll of film or a 35mm film camera with a 45 minute tape.

Hello! I was reading about the difference between the 50mm's and I must say I love my 1.8
Should I have cloned that guy out behind her head?

I have never owned any other DSLR than a Canon. The 40D is the first, and its only been 1 year. So I am still very new at DSLR's.
...and the wife has had me cleaning the basement this US holiday weekend except for yesterday. Sunday is skate day where I visit the alter of slalom. No work on Skate Day. I have not had my camera out, ANY camera out this weekend. Maybe I will get to as the sun sets. Can't complain..she purchased the 5D and the glass.

Re: official photography thread
Hey I'm looking to get into some amateur photography stuff to help with things to draw and paint for the AP art classes I'm taking. I've always drawn and been into art and stuff but don't know much about photography. I have a some cheap-ish digital right now that has always gotten the job done, but now I can tell how bad it is.
Could someone direct me to a resource(s) that would tell me about the basics of photography and also a good blog or some such that talks about different types of cameras so I can decide what to get. Cuz I'm looking to possibly drop a pretty penny on this camera.
Thanks!

Re: official photography thread
KenRockwell.com , i like this site
If you're into art, you should be able to bring in what you learned about composition, use of space and ,lighting into photography. You'll just need a rundown on the technical aspects of a camera and terminology. All you're really doing is changing your medium of expression from drawing to photography. Also you don't need to break the bank to take interesting or rousing photos.

That might be harsh, but in reading his camera reviews and the like I would not really suggest him as a learning tool.

There is a lot of stuff out there! I'm not sure what you have for equipment and knowledge, but I would suggest setting up a flickr page. There are tons of groups on flickr with free information, and there are even more tons of really silly people doing really silly things with weak information, but you can sort through it and learn from the good ones.
Check out David Hobby's strobist blog, and the strobist flickr site for lighting info, it's great. I remember photo.net from a ways back and even have a page on there but I have not looked at that site in a really long time, they have some forums that might be of help to you. Some people really like the Luminous Landscape site, but I never make time for it.
You mentioned art classes, are you in college? Should be courses in basic photo. If that's not your thing try interning in your schools PR office or at the student paper. Where do you go to school?

What id did was...
1. decide how much i can spend.
2. determine which camera's i could afford in that budget
3. research those cameras, i used Digital Camera Reviews and News: Digital Photography Review: Forums, Glossary, FAQ
4. I decided which one looked good and dropped the money on a used one.

Re: official photography thread
Dang lots of good answers. Thanks a lot everyone I'll check out the resources people mentioned. I'm a senior in high school working on my portfolio for art school hopefully. I'm not as much interested in photography as the end product but as a tool in my painting and drawing. Like whenever I need reference photos going out and taking the actual photo instead using some bullsh1t photo off google images.
I'm not looking to get something that breaks the bank, but a real good quality camera for indoor and out that I can use for many years is really the idea.
Thanks again for all the answers.

Ha, yeah. great cameras (40D is a 'better' camera than the 50D INMHO). Just messing with a little canon vs nikon jab.
I was Canon through and through until I had to go Nikon when I went on ships and suddenly I was like 'aaaaah, that's how I always wanted a camera to work!' It's like I always tell people when they come into my shop, so much about how you use a camera is personal preference and what feels comfortable. They all do the same job and to most people the intricacies between either brand are negligible, what's important is you can learn to get the best from which ever you choose.
When it comes to the 5D MK II there is no competitor.
As for Ken Rockwell, I read his site every day. He makes me cringe so much. I don't hate him but I wouldn't recommend his site as a learning tool either. I read his reviews because I can cut through the BS and get to what I want to know pretty easily. It makes me laugh how much power he has though, and I see sales trends obviously affected by what he writes.
