Re: official photography thread
My 18-55 lens has the auto focus feature.. I rarely use it though. I can get a much sharper image with it in manual.
Thanks for all of the help guys.

i think the one on the right takes away from that. both great shots, but maybe if you had put the sad one first, someone looking at it would stop looking at the picture in a happier mood.

If so, you need to learn to use the auto focus better The D40 doesn`t have a viewfinder that`s good to manual focus(actually, most DSLR doesn`t) and you can expect even sharper results when you can handle the AF correctly.
Get a copy of National Geographics Field Guide to Photography, a great book to begin with.

Which one is better?

Oh and Blix, thanks. I'm gonna pick that book up soon. They didn't have it at Barnes and Noble, I gotta check Borders.

Re: official photography thread
Fuzz, this is the sort of scene I really like -

dark roads, back allies, minimal lighting etc.
This short could have been improved by using a higher ISO or a tripod and maybe better focusing (I think it's actually out of focus as opposed to just camera shaken).
With your skater shots maybe try to get a little closer. If you cropped closer to your friend carving the bank that could be a great photo.
There are loads of useful websites with camera tips and techniques. I like using sites like Digital Camera Reviews and Digital Photography Techniques even if they're quite cliquey in respects to ratings and feedback you can often find some nice tips in the 'technique' sections of these sights. I also use deviantart as a 'creative resource' to help provide inspiration or stuff I want to try. If you like how a photo looks go away and try to achieve the same affect. Just shoot as much as possible too.

Re: official photography thread
Here are a couple other things I've done. This was shot in a studio. The subject is a chemistry professor, I had him email me jpg images of chemical models related to his research. I ganged them up in different sizes on an 8.5x11 image, and printed it out on overhead transparency material. I projected that over him, and used what was more or less a darkroom-type dodge tool to block his face. The exposure was a couple seconds, camera mounted on tripod. His face is lit by a monolight with a grid on it. He is framed in the lower right corner because this was shot for a magazine cover, titles and text and stuff went in the other areas:

To prove cheap cameras can yield good photos, this one was taken with a Canon a510. Probably can get one for $100 now. The camera was on manual, and the flash on low, aperture stopped down. Source light is a Nikon SB800 behind the bottles. Photo taken Christmas before last, we both got Scotch for gifts. I'm on the right:

Portrait of my old Great Dane, she is no longer with us, she was an amazing dog. Smartest I've ever met, I love the photo I think it shows her age and wisdom, she was 14 when this was taken. When we lost her she was almost 16. Lit with Vivitar 283 flashes, one on camera right bounced from umbrella, one from behind and above her head:

Re: official photography thread
I am loving all the pictures posted, these are fantastic!! I wish I could shoot like that!
Bah, I need to give a short rant... One would think that when you purchase a film camera, you would know and understand that "Hey, this is a film SLR. Cool." When you write a review of said camera, you would keep this in mind, I would think.
The reason I say this is that I was reading a review for one of the film Canon EOS Rebels.. and some guy.. sheesh. He wrote a half decent review, and then there was space included for a brief summary of good things and dissapointments. His "dissapointment" was that this camera "is not a digital SLR." Well, DUH. *shakes head*
Anyway, I picked up a really good condition Pentax K-1000 with a NICE camera bag and flash two weekends ago for like twenty bucks. I also grabbed an Argus C3 Matchmatic (another rangefinder) to play around with. It needs some cleaning. Keep your eyes peeled at things like silent auctions, they yield some fun stuff.

Thanks. It doesn't really hit you until you go to fill up their dog dish for the first time. I put it down on the ground and started to call out her name, and just started to tear up. You think that it won't be you, but since I am an only child, she was like my sister almost. Dogs always manage to get you attached in some way or another.
