That is what is known as a "cairn". They are meant to help navigate..ie: this is where to cross the creek. We use them here as well when on long treks, so as to not get lost, or to show someone who is suppose to meet you, which way you went, and what path to take.
That is an interesting one, the way it is balanced outward!!

I REALLY need help with action shots. I rely on Auto mode way too much. What is the proper way to do it?

auto looks like it worked well for ya, i think you could have found more interesting angles though, in general.

Yeah, the shots look fine to me, too!

I guess if you want to play with your ISO, shutter speed, or exposure compensation or something you can go manual. But unless you're going for a specific effect, I would stick to autofocus even in manual mode, stuff happens too quickly in sports. 99.99999999999999992342342089345rsdfss453% of the time, the camera can find the sharpest position faster than I can.

what kind of camera do you have? you could try shooting in RAW, it will open up a whole load of possibilities.

Vulgar, get your ass out of auto everything (use aperture priority) and shoot at a larger apertures to reduce the dof and isolate your subjects better. Bright sunlight isn`t the best conditions either, shoot earlier or later for less harsh light. RAW won`t make a HUGE difference, but it certainly gives you more to work with in post.
