I believe there is an option to put down where you are located in your profile.

you are correct.

but any buy/sell/trade depends on location, for approximate estimates of shipping, or local handoffs. a mandatory field would eliminate the "where are you located?" messages and comments. people who want to protect their privacy can put private, and that would force a pm from any interested party.
