The most annoying thing I've ever seen
is directly related to rep, surprisingly.
A new kid gets on and sees all these super cool skateboarders with their green bars. He thinks "Hey, I want to be a super cool skateboarder! I want green bars!"
Then, he sees a thread asking a question about an an avenger.
"I mean ####, I've never ridden an avenger" new kid thinks to himself "but everybody says that w-cave makes your foot hurt! I'm going to post about it!"
That kid then posts some bullshit about a board he has never ridden/held/even ####### seen in real life.
I don't know, maybe its just me, but its really annoying. I find myself calling kids out this site, and the sad part is that they typically admit to never riding a board they just told some kid to go drop $250 on.

I see your point. However, you can know plenty about a board and have never ridden it. There are some characteristics of boards that you can know without riding them. Drop thrus, drop decks, top mounts all have different feels across the board. I've recommended boards to people that I've spent little or no time on simply because from the knowledge I have gathered about it and the type of riding that person is looking to do. Experience is priceless, but accumulated knowledge can help make very educated guesses.
I used to work at a ski shop and would sell skis to people that I had never ridden, and they loved them. Why? Because I knew how the shape would perform, what experience level and type of riding it would cater to, and had heard reviews on it from people who had ridden it. It's no different when someone recommends a board that they had never ridden but know something about.
By the way, wtf does this have to do with rep?

Yeah, there are characteristics. But what you just described is, in my opinion, completely unacceptable. If a kid asks the difference between a topmount and a dropthrough, tell him. Don't compare and contrast an elise and a hellcat if you've only ridden the hellcat but "know how topmounts feel"

what other incentive would a kid have to post about something he doesnt know about other than green bars?

hah, an indicator of the actual knowledge here
In all seriousness though, I know theres not really a lot you can do about it. I got my wisdom teeth pulled today and have little more to do than bitch at the internet.

I would argue that this is an inherent problem to internet forums.
What can you do?

It's more than just understanding a general type of a deck man. There are things like concave, wheel wells, wheelbase size, symmetry, etc. that can help you form an understanding of how a board will perform. You don't need to ride a board to be able to understand and interpret known facts. Take the wheel debate going on in the Fresh Fish thing, for example. People are hating on reflex flywheels that have never ridden them. They can do that because they have experience with high performance urethane and different wheel shapes and can figure out that they won't be very good, without having k-rimes come in an save the day. Basically, I agree with what you in that people should not give advice on things they are not well informed about, but you can be well informed and not own every board on the market.
As for the green bars, I don't think kids think they're gonna get teh green barz because they post something about a board. They're just excited, think they know what they're talking about, and want to be cool. 90% of my rep is from posting stupid pictures or making dumb jokes, not giving good advice
EDIT: Sucks about the teeth. Enjoy the drugs!

Re: The most annoying thing I've ever seen
I got green bars a lot faster than I got good at skateboarding.......
I already stopped getting bars yet my skill and knowledge continue to grow....
I kept writing different sentences here but I can't figure out a valid way to make a rep system for the internet.

Re: The most annoying thing I've ever seen
Bottom line if it wasn't a ego based on rep, it would be postcount, or it would be join date, or it would be how long people been skating, or how many boards they they have ridden, or how big their quiver is or how many creative ways they can use gnar...
Reality is... all you need is to be confident in why you skate.
When you got that, everything else falls away.
The chittering hoard, nothing but wind in your ears.

The sage, Longboard Buddha once said, "A tree spends 100% of its lifetime in a static environment and only after its reincarnation as a deck is it allowed to move at fast speeds...
when allowed, the wood will give thankless service if
allowed to flow."

So, what now.. ? Are you claiming to be an oral surgeon or sumpin? You gave it away when you used the term "wisdom teeth" that is not anatomically correct and Dentist/Surgeons only use that term to the laymen ..newb
