what happened to images in the sigs?

When the new forum first came up, you couldnt have images in your signature. Then it was fixed and it worked again. Now it seems that it's gone back to not working.

Will we be able to have images in our sigs again? Or has there been a decision made to ban images?

It's up in the air. Several months ago, the site published some guidelines for images in sigs, and things got a little better. Lately, the proliferation of graphics in signatures has gotten a lot worse, and it makes anyone on WiFi or Dial-Up totally bummed when they have to wait for signature graphics to load 4,5, or 10 times in a page view on a thread.

DanZ has brought the avatars back down to spec, even for those that chose to ignore the size standards, and is working on a solution to impose some kind of limitation in the signatures. We know we want to allow code and links, but the trick is to figure a way to either limit graphic size or ?? It's all about minimizing delays for people as our numbers continue to increase. At this point the Ultra Gnar 9000 has all the speed and RAM we could ask for, but heavy graphics slow down our personal computers as we display pages.

Woo it's fixed!

Another thing, there's an option in the control panel that you can choose to disable viewing peoples signatures. You can also diasble viewing avatars.

but shouldnt some of that responsibility fall back on the end-user? it is VERY easy in all commerical browsers to disable images. and as RustyBurrito55 mentioned, each user has the option of disabling the view of others' signatures.

Yeah, fair point there. That's something to be balanced with the concern over speed and aesthetics for all members. I think this is why the team are working to find a solution that works best for everyone in the long run.
