Rep
What the hell...Rep Power? I vote we get rid of that retarded feature. If you can not give someone a reputation on your own and decide for yourself whether or not their posts have value, the value of a social networking tool is lost on you anyway.
Besides, I fail to see how you could derive personal pride from the level of your reputation. "I have 23 rep and you're a n00b, I'm clearly more superior."
I toyed with the idea of a poll but it would carry little value anyway. If you have any thoughts on the matter, speak up.
thought =/= 100110101110001010110100 etc.

I went into a coma, badly broke my pelvis, lacerated my liver and almost died on the mountain AND later in the hospital. The rehabilitation therapists had to teach me how to do everything again...everything.
I survived that mountain because of my helmet...WEAR ONE and send your family to the hospital, not the morgue.

Re: Rep
Rep should be destroyed imo.
i mean....
I have more rep points than you, and I know you have contributed wayyyyyyyyyyyyy more to this site than I ever did.
The trouble with the world is that the stupid are cocksure and the intelligent are full of doubt.

Re: Rep
Definitely get rid of rep, it's a really stupid feature and just makes posters think they're better than each other based on how often they post (and how funny their jokes are apparently?)

why does it matter THAT much?

Re: Rep
The reason we have rep is to control what people say. The vast majority of people will not do something knowing that their reputation will be demeaned. Even the people who claim to not care about it. However, there are some people who actually don't care at all. For example, i really think that EC doesn't give a #### about what people think about him on the internet.

Do you seriously think anyone on this site cares about their rep? It doesn't mean anything. The reputation you learned about in psychology is completely different - it's character reputation. Rep on this site is based on some weird combination of post # and rep ups from other people, but I've gotten a bunch of rep because I made some funny posts. Does that say anything about how helpful I am?
Silverfish rep means nothing.

Re: Rep
In this forum, it was meant to enhance certain virtues (I believe) However, it has been abused to some extent. I happen to have some, but it in no way affects what my intent or knowledge is.. If you think it's dumb..ignore it. If you don't..have fun with it.

Re: Rep
I like to use it as a feedback tool without making excessive posts that state "i agree" or "good info". I only rep posts that I think really add value to the site, and I am able to tell the difference when someone reps me for something they truly enjoyed, or if they are only repping me because I have repped them in the past. When someone sends me positive rep for a post that I know was indeed humorous or helpful, I see it as an opportunity to browse through their posts and give them positive feedback on something helpful they have posted in the past, or good ideas, thoughts, or even something that lightened the mood and indicated they weren't taking a discussion that got out of hand too seriously. I may not completely agree with how "rep power" is calculated, but I certainly see the reputation function as a helpful feedback tool. One simply has to differentiate between "rep whoring" and useful feedback

Re: Rep
I personally think rep can be a good tool for feedback. Maybe removing it from visible posts but still making it accessible to the poster is a good route of action. Either way, the 'Fish is channeling tons of great knowledge, rep or not.

Your an idiot. It is a part of human nature. It is true across all mediums. Im not going to bother explaining further.

rep is lame, its like wearing a uniform. everyone, scared of what people might think, conform to a safe popular view.

Re: Rep
So maybe instead of reputation it should be called cheese points or something and then maybe we wouldn't be having this discussion?
I'm quite sure that nobody really cares too much about how many reputation points they have. It is just another game to play here. In a forum, just like everywhere else in life, to get any value from a conversation with others you have to keep an open mind and examine details thoroughly; basically, you have to think and evaluate what you come across on your own. If you worry that people will give more credence to the posts of someone of a higher "reputation" than another, don't. People are free to think and do as they choose, and to suffer the consequences when they are wrong.
