why dont you all just start your own helmet brand just for downhill skating?

i've been thinking about this lately. if they put on a faceshield and marketed it to downhill skateboarding, people would start looking into the safety specs and realize bell lids don't have the same safety as dot and snell rated helmets. unfortunately liability could easily come into the picture

risch aerohelmets was founded by skaters i believe. unfortunately aero helmets are made to be aero... ive seen several videos of crashes where the aero lid literally flies off. it costs a lot to get helmets certified.

timeship racing sells motorcross helmets with "custom" faceshields. thats pretty much the only way i see something like this happening. if it were to get too big though, the company supplying the actual helmets might not be too happy. besides, with a charly visor a bell helmet jumps in price from $100 to $175 without labor.

Bell likely wont mass produce a DH skateboarding helmet, let alone make just face shields. They have a MUCH larger market with biking for their full faces. I doubt it would be cost effective for them to develop and produce helmet just for DH skateboarding. You could argue that bikers could still use them though but I think they use goggles and sun shade for reason?

I'd do it for people. It's a huge pain in the ass. I'd charge at least 30 bucks not included the shield, and there would be no guarantee for me not screwing it up...

You didn't cut the tip of the visor did you? So there are still holes right?

I understand why bell might not want to get into the DH market, however:-

I don't see why they cant make a face shield as an accessory to fit the current bell drop. They could easily sell it for the same as a charlay visor and it would increase their sales of the helmet itself.

Longbord1 can you give us a little more information on what you did to affix that visor to the Bell Drop? Is that just a Charly tinted visor, and you simply drilled new holes??

You guys should be aware that charly visors are not the only visors that are suitable for a bell drop. TexasBomber here on the Fish got a visor that he linked me to, and is fixing it to his helmet with tape and velcro for now but has plans for hardware that he already got, and it looks really good. These visors are like 1/4 the cost of a charly visor too. Perhaps Thompson will grace us with his presence in this thread. 8)

TimeShip Racing sells the lexans visors they use on their custom motocross helmets for $15. I have no idea if it would fit a drop though. Anyone tried it?
