    Default Protec Knee Pad Satisfaction

My local skate shop only carries protec knee pads. How do you guys like them? I'm not sure whether they're the ramp or street pads but any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Dennis

IMO kneepads arn't worth owning if they haven't got an open back. They become too much a pain in the ass to deal with otherwise.

Because they're uncomfy, too hott, etc.? Seems like they'd stick to ya the best during a fall though... What are some good open back pads you recommend?

    Thanks,
    Dennis

Rather on account of the fact that they require so much more effort to don and remove.

Removal of the shoes - trying to drag the pad over a pair of pants/pulling pant legs up around your thighs donning pads and then trying to pull pantlegs back over pads - putting shoes back on.

It got to the point where I said f-it and just kept on getting holes in my knees rather than struggling with my pro-tecs. Now, I've never worn 187's, I have no idea about their design, but I own a pair of http://socalskateshop.com/index.php?..._detail&p=9295 and I cannot offer a single complaint. They were certainly built to last. (one thing I haven't mentioned is straps. The protec pads have some of the most worthless strap I've ever seen on anything, ever, in my life. They stretch out horribly and fail regain elasticity.)

The point I intended to make was: If you wish to spend money on safety gear, you should deffinately get some that you won't feel bothered to wear.

pro tecs are fine, if you dont want to slide your legs through the liner... dont, you can just throw them on without it, just strap up over the liner. its a good option to have.
i ride protec because apparently i have legs the size of tree trunks and no other brand fits me... theyre the only one with an xl.
i love my protecs, but like any knee pad i would get i only wear them when im doing somthing im not comfortable with.
    plus they're cheaper then 187s.
if you really dont want a liner though head on over to home depot, they have some husky knee pads that i wear when im puting in patios and stuff, i drop to my knees on hard stone and don't feel a thing, they're pretty comfy too!
ill edit this and add a link i can find em online.

Thanks guys. Does it really matter if I buy the "ramp" pads for riding street? Will they get torn up easier?

i have a set of the protec street elbow and knee pads (got them for $45 together).

they've been serving me well for 8 months or so, they were uncomfortable at first but i got used to them.

i took my first fall at speed (25mph lol) in some protec "street" knee pads. shreded up the side really bad but my knee was fine. theres better quality out there, it depends on how much you want to pay (187 pads for example).

pro tec is fine for basic knee pads. They have been serving me well for almost a year and I still wear them. The sides that dont have plastic caps on them has gotten shredded, but I repair them with fabric adhesive, back to normal. As for the slip on style, I dotn know if I would wear something else, or else you risk it slipping and not providing protection in a fall. If your really complaining about having to take your shoes off to get them off, then just dont wear knee pads in the first place. If your taking a break and having a rest, just undo the straps, and slip the pads down to your ankles for some relief. Jeez.

i've been using mine for 2 years.
they're nearly destroyed, but still work as intended. Also, kneegaskets help alot.

Haha thanks guys. I think I'll be able to manage the "inconvenience" of the slip on style.

Does it really matter whether if I go for the Ramp or the Street pads when riding street?

I think the local skate shop is pretty expensive. If I'm going to measure my legs for sizing to order online where do I measure the circumference of my legs from?

    Thanks,
    Dennis

I've been using protecs (the ramp ones i think, but i'm not sure) for more than 2years now and they served me well. They're worn and ripped, but are still holding together fine.
When i'm wearing long leg pants i just strap them on, when i'm wearing shorts i prefer to take the hassle of taking my shoes off rather than risking them slipping off.
I haven't much to compare them to, but i'd buy them again.

I've had mine for almost 2 years. These pads shouldn't last that long, but I don't use them much. The closed back is annoying and doesn't make for easy on/off. Mine are pretty shredded though and I plan on picking up some 187 pros this week.

I highly recommend the 187 pads. Particulary the pros but both are good.

the vert and the street pads provide different kinds of protection... probably it doesn't matter. you strap a pad on your knee, its gonna keep it safe, but just go for whatever is cheaper. its probably tailored more torawds what kind of surface you might fall on, ifr you fall on wood a different material may hold up better than another... also it probably has to do with the way your strapped in. i assumed that a street pad would be a little more maneuverable than a vert one so i picked that up over the others.
as for sizing... check the site, all pads and companies are cut differently. the best thing you could do is just try some on at your shop... if the prices are steep than don't buy them. at least you have a feel for the size you need. sorry shop owner your prices are bad. or you could be cool and support local shops/ try to factor in shipping costs. and all the free stickers they give out.
1 (foot per second) = 0.681818182 miles per hour
so 2/3 of your feet per second speed is your speed in mph.

I owned the street ones and was very satisfied. A friend of mine had the vert ones and the open back was clearly a plus, but all in all they both protected our knees.

If you can choose between the two though the vert ones are the way to go.

    EDIT:
Or 187. Best pads I've tried compared to crazy creek, protec and tripple 8 pads. The only brand I wouldn't recommend would easily be crazy creek. Tripple 8 works like a charm and protec is as much of a champ, but the 187 just becomes a part of you when you get used to them.

This was incredibly helpful. Thanks all.

I was planning on trying some on at the local shop. If the prices aren't too bad compared to online prices+shipping then I'll definitely support them. But if they're selling the street pads for 38$ like I think they said on the phone then I'm gonna have to hit up amazon haha.
