Default I don't need my helmet this hills easy...

    WRONG!

My head injury from June 10th 2009, I consider myself extremely lucky, anyways here is a result of cockiness at it's best.

This is how it went down.

It was roughly 4:00 at my friend's I peaced it since I had work at 5:00, anyways, I always do/did this bomb with a helmet, not a big bomb by any means comared to other stuff at all. But for some reason it was to much of hassle for me so I said #### it because it was in my backpack. So I'm at the top of the hill look at my watch it 4:30 and I'm at the other end of town so I start busting my ass and push till I'm around 25 km then go down the hill. It's by no means a long hill or a fast hill but I reckon i hit 40/45 km because I ripped past cars slowing down because it was a school zone. I take the first right lovin this hill its a big S that goes for about a good 300m or so a decent amount of speed. For some reason, I've never done this before on this hill, I decided I should be a curtious longboarder and peel off at the bottom on top the dipped driveways onto the sidewalk. Big mistake. I don't remember anything after that point. I remember waking up but not seeing anything only hearing people around me and the ambulance. I knew I bailed but didn't think I did as badly as I did. I really wanted to thank whoever called the ambulance and watched me for then but never got to sadly. I wasn't making much sense appearently when i came to. Anyways at the hospital is what really scared me, I heard them talking about CT scans to see if my brain was bleeding(keep in mind I had no idea still how bad I was) I freaked out in my mind thinking if this was it. Scans show'd nothing thankfully..I was lucky, I could have died easily but I guess it wasn't my time. I now always rock my full face + pad's DH and my half lid + pads for sliding carving. Don't be stupid wear your lid and don't let your friends be ignorant encourage them to wear a helmet, we don't need any more dead longboarders. R.I.P. to any of the longboarders shreddin in heaven.

    Holy ####, that is terrifying!

You are really lucky to be alive!

I wasn't really a helmet person before, but I just ordered one yesterday after cruising around on Adam Colton's site and clicking on the link to the videos here:
    wipeout

I would definitely not like to have brain damage.

Anyhow, congrats on living through it and I'm sure this experience will inspire others to always be wearing a helmet. Yikes!

Great, yeah I was very lucky no brain damage at all, I came away from that with pretty minor #### considering. Oh I also fractured like my sinus I think it was and like the top left part of my skull and a hairline fracture on the right side of my jaw. They've healed properly and I didn't end up having to get surgery luckily.

    Super depressing thread.

    That's probably important though.

After watching "Crazy Crash, Shocking Aftermath" on that wipeout website, I just want to beat those ****ing kids up. Seriously, who the **** laughs at something like that?

Yeah that was really sad, like I just felt bad for that kid that this happened and these were his friends. "I have a concussion call the cops" "get up....get up...etc."

You can laugh afterwards at his idiocy due to the fact he wasn't wearing a helmet.

Not sure if this applies to where everyone lives, however, we have a hospital near us A.I DuPont Chidren's Hospital in Wilmington DE, that has a relatively unknown inexpensive helmet program. Basically, they have a store in the hospital that has a stock of all kinds of helmets that they sell for $5-$10. If you are low on funds, it may be worth calling around to see if any hospitals etc. have a similar program in your area. Those pics prove a lesson learned the hard way.

Oh yeah, i re-visited the spot that I bailed like a week later, the driveway i tried to pull up onto had a much bigger lip then normal(The part the drops down so you can drive your car) it wasnt the regular inch or so, it was a whole 3 inches, resulting in what I'm guessing head first into the pavement idk for sure because I don't remember that park. That's why I have a huge chunk missing from my wheel on my old board. I'll probably throw some pics up later.

Wow, shocking and upsetting. Every time I go out to shred at even 5 mph, I always wear my helmet. I'm glad to hear that you were okay after this terrible accident.

I deal with my wife's brain injury every day. She was in a car accident 5 years ago and in a coma for 2 weeks. She is doing a lot better but she deals with depression, issues with balance and motor skills. Half of her tongue is numb and she chokes on food and even water at times. Forget about the physical injuries that she is still recovering from after all these years, but it's a very long process of rehab. She would love to skate but can't stand on a skateboard without holding on to me to balance. I don't mean to sound uppity, however I can't stress the importance of a helmet. Of course she was T-boned in a car accident, but at least she had a seatbelt on and some protection that the car provided. Think how bad that could be on a board with no helmet. I don't skate, even on flat land without a helmet. I usually have helmet and gloves on for cruising and commuting and knee pads when riding hills. Protect yourselves fellas.

i never used to wear a helmet, even when doing downhill. but thanks to a friend who kept bugging me to wear my helmet and a bail where i got lucky, i now wear one every single session. since then helmets have saved me twice from serious head injury.

i dont even think about what other people might think about me wearing one. the only thing that bugs me is wearing my fullface. everything feels so different and the restricted vision and hearing scare me.

I just got a call from my cousin... his ex girlfriend fell riding her bike and is now brain-dead. There was no damage to the bike, no other injuries on her body... This is a really sudden and shocking loss for my family, she was close to us all. Wear your helmets, OP is extremely lucky, all it takes is a simple fall and your life could be over

That's exactly why you should wear a helmet

My old one is a biiiit too tight and feels real uncomfortable so tomorrow either before or after my FSM lands on my doorstep I'm gonna go get a new helmet that fits right, and some pads so I can slide harder and not worry about my limbs.
