True, happens to me all the time too. Here it's mostly cars getting on the road when im bombing requiring me to slide to a stop or slide off the road into the dirt, and bailing. But some of the drivers freak out too, especially moms with kids or older people stop the car and sit there as if they almost died instead of me.

I know that most of the times they are just inconsiderate drivers but when they I notice that they don't know where I came from I apologize to the ones I notice are freaking out. Although sometimes i just can't help smiling cause it was a close call. I know its kinda odd but It's my automatic reaction when I almost get hit or fall while boarding, don't know why.

When I do smile they just nod and tell me I'm crazy. I ride padded up with a helmet but I know it can go wrong even with protection, because it happens often I think I got my reaction time and drift-sliding-off-the-road thing down.

Glad your alive dude, hope you enjoyed that beer. Ride another day.

We got these nasty little sandspurs here.

Click the image to open in full size.

Careful bailing on the side of road. Sometimes it hurts more than eating asphalt.

Ouch man! those look painful. I kinda have to slide off the road when I know I wont slide to a stop before reaching the car. Lucky we don't have those mean looking plants. We do have cacti and sharp rocks, but not on the road I bomb luckily.

Wow. 17 deaths due to car accidents in one year! I come from a school of about 2,000. We'd be lucky (or unlucky) to see 1 or 2 the whole 4 years of high school. I know a few wreck-less drivers but nothing compared to your stories.

Luckily, we don't have rocks... just soft sand and those little bastards. I saw a cactus once or twice before... but none on the actual spot I claimed as my turf. I couldn't image hitting a cactus... >.<

yeah I knew a guy like that in high school. he rear ended someone eventually; busted up his girlfriends nose against the dash something awful.. she had a rather awkwardly large nose to begin with.

the closest I've come to death was riding my motorcycle a few years ago... some girls in a giant SUV blew a stop sign at around 40 on a residential street, I was also speeding, but had the right of way.. ended up stopped parallel to the vehicle about 2 feet from the gas tank lid, the image of which for some reason is like etched into my brain. that kind of #### really clears the cobwebs out of your head.

Yeah dude, I had one similar incident... I'm glad that day I took my car. These girls made a 100% illegal left hand turn out of this daycare. They had a right turn only sign. They pulled out less than 100 foot in front of me and stopped completely in my lane, waiting for traffic to clear to continue. It happened so fast, I cocked the wheel and hit the brakes, drifted around them. It was such a close call... I thought i hit them. I mean, i came within 6 inches easily. I left 4 separate tire marks.

I look back now and wonder if I should have hit them in sheer spite of failing to be a considerate driver. They had a nice car. I'm sure I could have sewed...

I'm so glad I didn't take my bike out. I would have hit them for sure. I fly on my bike.

I know what your talkin bout when you say it was a realiy check. I was walking to school one fine mornin (didnt have a longboard then) and I was crossing a street bout a minuit from my house and I looked both ways but there were cars parked all along the side of the road so I couldent see properly. Then I go to run across the road, look right and theres some car speeding twards me. I managed to get far enough across that it only cliped my hip/leg and I got sent about 3 feet up and landed in the grass on the side of the road. I picked myself up, only had a small scratch on my forehead, and was able to walk away after the woman in the car calmed down. they ofered me a lift but they semed realy creepy so i refused. I carried on my to school and realised what a wreak i looked and exactaly what happened and freaked out, I called my mum and went to the hospital for a cheak up and I was fine, but it was flippin scary. they must have been goin over the speed limit cos there were no cars on the road and they couldent have got off the roundabout at one end of the road in that amount of time if they were at 20 like the law says.
