Half-Shell helmet recommendations
Alright i've got 2 full face helmets, So that's covered. I have even started wearing my bell drop while doing small hills and sliding when i would usually just wear a half shell. I've got a cheap pro-tec half shell helmet, that i fell on today when i hit a rock going 5 mph. It felt like i wasn't even wearing a helmet. Can anyone recommend me a good half-shell to wear when i'm not doing any serious boarding. Brainsaver? Bell? i'm willing to to drop some cash to protect my head, but not ready to commit to wearing a full face while cruising the streets.

Re: Half-Shell helmet recommendations
I just got a Giro Section. I like it a lot, looks like your typical half shell helmet. What sets it apart though is that it's much much lighter than a lot of its competitors (with the exception of the tsg superlight, but those are quite hard to get a hold of in the US). It's weight is comparable to a cycling helmet. I took it out on a garage sesh and totally forgot I was wearing it.

What kind of foam is inside that helmet of yours?

2 stage foam from the sounds of it. It is not good stuff at all. Pro-tec does offer helmets in EPS foam and SXP foam which are both CPSC certified, tho.

the pro-tec was a cheap hand me down from a friend, i've looked at other pro-tec helmets and mine by far has the least and cheapest feeling liner i've ever seen. I ended up ordering a pair of bell factions last night off of jensonusa. 9 bucks a piece, for the older model, but the helmet is certified and i read pretty good things about it.

I have a Bern G that I got off of Ebay. The newer G2 weighs 14oz. ZipMold foam. The venting can be closed if you snowboard. Very comfy.

Re: Half-Shell helmet recommendations
ok so a follow up...
I got the Giro Flak off Amazon for $35 and free shipping. after reading reviews and such, I was thinking this was a really minimalist, streamlined looking lid. The helmet showed up and was ENORMOUS (Large size) -- it actually fit okay around my head, but it looked like an astronauts dome, compared with the XL Pro-Tec I've been wearing for the past decade. I'm sure it might look better on someone who has a bigger face, bigger jawline, maybe a Viking beard, to offset the gigantuous Kingdome-like outer shell. I just had to return it, which kind of sucks. I'm still intersted in the Giro Section but nobody carries it here and now I'm a bit online-gun shy when it comes to helmet.
So I'll probably pick up a Bern at the local bike shop (Gregg's Greenlake) because they have a handful of colors and styles and I could try them on. The local skate shop unfortunately is only carrying ones that I'm not into.

snowboarding has produced some pretty heavy duty half shells too. (or at least "open face")

Speaking to snowboard helmets, a company called Sandbox makes both EVA foam and certified EPS foam helmets that are pretty nice (at least I think so). They have both a visor and 'typical' half shell designs. Personally I love their approach to the visor helmet, very baseball-esque and not as streamlined as Bern's models.
