There are several slides that you can use to control speed. Try to learn to footbrake first since it's a bit easier to learn and a useful skill to have as well.

watch a lot of youtube videos. watch all of the videos on skatehousemedia.com (the older videos are better IMO) to footbrake you take your back foot off and press it against the ground (yes, this kills shoe soles).

make sure you pad up for safety

don't worry too much about break in. if you've been riding your wheels for a while they're fine. practice is more important than gear.

The coleman slide may look easy but make sure you pad up for your first runs! You'll be thankful!

helmets are very important. more than pads but both should be worn from the get-go.

And footbraking is taking your pushing foot off the board to slow yourself down.

I'm weird, I push with my front foot and brake with the same. My friends don't understand how I do it, just like I don't understand how any of them push with their back feet.

No we have lost another to the dark side of mongo pushing. Seriously thoegh if you can try to break with the other foot. It is easier and less squirrely.

I find it common that people new to riding will have an easier time pushing mongo, which is when you keep your back foot planted on the board, and kick with your front foot. Also, a lot of these people feel it necassary to start learning to foot brake with the back foot on the board, and front foot dragging. This is not necassary. In fact its probably going to make it harder for you to get foot braking down well. By taking all your weight off the front truck, your inviting speed wobbles at even slightly higher speeds.

Pushing mongo is fine, I can push regular and mongo pretty well, but my mongo kick is bad ass. When it comes to foot braking my regular foot braking is pretty good, but when braking mongo i can only do so at slightly over pushing speeds before it gets awkward. Practice doing both kicking methods, but stick with regular foot braking for awhile.

I've always pushed mongo since I started about a year ago. I got braking down to where I can brake mongo at speeds around 25 - 30 mph. It was a little squirrely at first, but I got used to it. I found the only way I could do it was to keep as perfect a balance as I could because if I leaned the slightest bit I'd get wobbles.

so.. mongo is when i leave my back foot on the back end of the board to break with the front front? so technically, i have to leave weight on the front truck? not all on the back?

yes, leave your front foot on the board and brake with your back foot. The easiest way to learn is to push on the flat, take your foot off, and put it on the ground softly, and apply more pressure until you stop. It's really easy to learn but be sure to start out slow either on the flat or a very low grade hills.

mongo footbreaking can be done but its more difficult. i have a friend who mongo footbreaks and it does not look pretty. if he had to stop quickly going faster than 30 km/h he would mess up BAD.
