Alternative To Helmets?

Hey,
I live in NYC, and I longboard. I have been longboarding for a while, but I decided I should probably get a helmet. I WOULD want to wear it all the time just to be safe. However, I WOULD NOT like to look like an idiot skating on the street with some big, clunky helmet on my head. Has anyone ever heard of anything that protects your head that isn't so bulky? I thought of possibly a protection pad you can put under your hat or something.

Any thoughts?

You know what makes you look like an idiot? Being fed through a straw and having your mom change your diapers because you were worried about looking cool on a skateboard.

A helmet works, other things don't. I know from experience:

You won't look like an idiot for WEARING a helmet, it's idiotic NOT to wear one.

And helmets really aren't very bulky and clunky, my brainsaver is very comfortable, and it's an awesome way for me to show off my skate sticker collection

The camera was on my head and, luckily, that camera was mounted onto the helmet that I was wearing. It took some healing, but I'm alive and well. If I were not wearing a helmet things could have played out very differently.

OK guys, I think you misunderstood me. I'm probably going to buy a helmet tommorow, but I was wondering if there was an alternative way to protect my head that you know of.

There's nothing like watching a friend "that knows how to skate" writhing on the ground, unconscious, to make a dude into a helmet-nazi. Don't take it too hard: be stoked people care enough to suggest it instead of waiting to see the brain-flecks.

I would say an alternate to helmets would be comas, brain damage and death...I personally think you look more like a "dork" drooling all over yourself after you've been put on life-support...

P.S. that "big clunky helmet" on your head is going to keep your big, clunky head from breaking open when it hits the hard, bone-breaking concrete...just something to keep in mind...

Its your choice run the risk or wear a helmet. I know that even before I skated if I saw someone with a helmet on while skateboarding I would never "what a loser he has no idea what he's doin". You aren't important enough for anyone else to care about you, no offense. The only person that cares is you. And most of the people you pass you will never see again so who cares what people think? If you care what people think don't skate only skaters like other skaters everyone else thinks they are a bane on the earth.

When you're on the ground and unconscious, you need peoples' help whether you like it or not. When you make "your choice" to not wear the helmet you're actually risking to force a very massive inconvenience and not-fun time onto all of people around you.
