Re: Broken Head, Broken Heart
Wow, i used to think that when im riding around my town casually, i wouldn't need my helmet. but you never know when you might see a sweet hill, or an unexpected crack in the road.
Strong story. Message taking in from it.

Wow, great story. I hope it encourages people to take a look again and realize that taking one simple precaution can mean the world.

Re: Broken Head, Broken Heart
i read this and always remember what my mom says
"wearing a helmet makes you look like a pro, like you know what you're doing."
And I can't even describe my joy about how much she cares about me, and all of us can relate.
Don't you DARE go with ought a helmet. Please.

Re: Broken Head, Broken Heart
I just read this and could stop! I read top of the page to the very bottom and every comment there and here!
I'm with most other people on the whole "I wear my helmet when I do technical stuff but not really skating from A to B." Definitely going to start wearing it more. I've had plenty of those how did that just happen kinda falls and was just glad i new how to fall (another good thing to know).
I have to say that I'm proud of most longboarders. They seem smart enough to wear helmets for the most part. Not trying to bash or anything, but shortboarders really need to get on their game. I almost never see a shortboarder with a helmet. (not saying none of them do though)
In the end, wear a helmet. It's not a style thing. It's a would "I like to see tomorrow thing."

Re: Broken Head, Broken Heart
Read all of it. Very sad, sadder knowing he can't do many things since his recovery. It's just little flukes that can change your life that much. Buy a 30 buck helmet, and you can save yourself everything this guy went through.

Re: Broken Head, Broken Heart
I admire his wife most. What she went through, is going through, will go through, is immense, and so remarkably brave.

Re: Broken Head, Broken Heart
Good to see this story is still getting out there. Personally, I can't watch my son skate or scooter w/o thinking about it and reminding him of the story if that lid's not on right.

Re: Broken Head, Broken Heart
WOW. That was a very compelling story. I'm so happy to hear he made it alive and still has a healthy family life and a functional body. I like to read about things like this to share with anyone I come across who thinks its uncool or unneeded.
I just went a ways pretty slow on my board without my helmet...less than jogging speed...but now I won't even do that.
Any update on the guy on Vashon-Mary island?

Re: Broken Head, Broken Heart
I read this awhile back and actually emailed Dorian, thanking him for the inspiration he's giving to me and my friends to always be safe. Here's what he said back:
"Man, thanks for the message and for taking time to let me know you're new outlook. It really means a lot.
Keep on shredding!"
What a nice guy; such a shame he and his wife went through so much.
Why can't we all just get along...board?

helmets FTW
Shred for the love of shredding.

Re: Broken Head, Broken Heart
Kyle Johnson had a similar injury, although on a longboard and with, maybe, a better prognosis than Dorian got. It's "Teen Shatters Skull"
Both sides removed to save his life from brain swelling.

Re: Broken Head, Broken Heart
Be careful about wearing headphones while riding. Cars don't slow down for pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists, or old people in wheel chairs. They won't slow down for you so you have to hear them to move out of the way. It's hard enough to hear stuff over the roar of wheels on pavement, so PLEASE be careful when riding to music. Make sure you ride where cars are not allowed if you're skating with headphones on.
Yup, it's been confirmed that at the company I work for, I'm officially known as "That Skateboarder Guy". I think I need a shirt or skateboard with the "That 70's Show" logo replaced by "That Skateboarder Guy".
Want list: Better question: What DON'T I want?!?!
