New Gear Suggestions
I am looking at buying some new knee pads and a new helmet this year for when winter is over. My problem is this, I prefer pads that have a sleeve. Does anyone know a brand that you slip on before you strap them? Also for helmets, what is a good brand for downhill?
Oh yeah, and I was looking at that mountain bike armour stuff for you legs, I figured a brother could probably wear these so he could still wear shorts safely while boarding. However, I have never used the stuff so I don't know if that would work or if they would just get ripped to shreds. You bikers out there let me know.

you want some great kneepads:
www.prodesigned.com
they slide on (i got the ones that don't but most of his do)
not sure on the mountain bike stuff -- most of it is shin/knee combo setups and i don't tend to tear my shins up too often. also, i think most of that stuff is made for surfaces other than concrete... not sure that that makes a difference or not

in the way of moutain bike pads, i dont think that the majority of them will take slidding on concreat, they are made more to take an impacts n slide on dirt so they never have really big thick plastic sliders (protec make some big ones they have a website i think no idea what the url is).
u wanna try n get some with a big think plastic knee bit cause they willl take alot more slidding.
as for helmets, no idea, i wear a Giro Semi tis a bmx/mtb/freeride/do ne thing lid. would not recomend it for DH, u wanna get a motorbike one if ur gonna go real fast. or get a fullface mountain bike one, like the giro madmax will protect ur face as well as the rest of ur face.
kerosene keeps me warm, it make me feel good to watch it burn

protec
Protec works good for me, too. There are some other topics covering more advanced saftey equipment, but it seems Protec (or similar) would work for all but high speeds. I've got deep scratches in the plastic that would have been my skin, so I'm satisfied.

Downhill (MTB) leg armour has no external plastic (in most cases). The nylon would shred first bail. The exception is the Azonic stuff, which is in actuallity, hockey armour. Hard cup knees and shins. Personally, I would go with ProTec, Pro-Designed, or in a pinch at a bike shop; Lizard Skins.
Helmet wise; go Bell Moto 4 or similar. You want DOT motorcycle protection.

of course, if you are real serious about speed; some motorcycle type leathers might be in order.. lots of them come all padded and everything...
-- i have gotten pretty severe bruises THROUGH pro-tec kneepads in a pool; not sure i'd wanna trust them at high speeds....
whatever you are using-- you probably want to buy some re-caps for the kneepads before you even use them and shoe goo or stick them in place somehow over the caps that come on them... recaps are a lot easier to replace than riveted on caps and concrete will rip them up....

hey atxjimatx
which pro-designed knee pads do you have?
i am looking at getting the "mini-ramp" 1" thick ones, i'm looking for a not super serious, but respectable ramp and pool pad.
i've also been looking at smith scabs, boneless, harbinger and 187, all seem to be decent mid-range pads. around the same price, better than the usual, but not quite up the the paincheaters or pro-designed level.

Guys, let me lay down a little bit of my widsom. High speed runs are my favorite times to fall down for a few reasons: First, you slide like no other when you sit down going 40mph. Second, bruises aren't as bad as low speeds, I've found. When I am going really fast, I want my pads to be able to take the sliding that I am going to be doing on them. I like thick plastic. Leathers are good too. When you're going fast, you typically don't crash into something when you fall, as opposed to when you are in a skatepark and you crash into a hip or a grom or something. When you are hauling, you just slide down a flat road and come to a stop 30 feet later. High speed pads aren't meant to protect you from bruises, they're mean to protect you from abrasions because that's where the real danger is. No matter how fast you are going, gravity will make you fall the same speed, but if you are going really fast, the energy from the fall is spread out over a larger area. Get good road rash protection, who gives a rats' about bruises.

the ones i have aren't on the site
they are the 1 and 1/3, Stepcore, Open back
have a full cap on the front plus an extra 1/3 of a cap underneath that one, the core is stepped up in thickness on the main area of impact and they use straps in the back instead of a slide on sleeve... he made em for Salba; but i got em from him down in Houston (where he lives ) before he sent em out. they are amazingly good.
also heard plenty of good things on paincheaters and boneless
the most expensive pads are a lot cheaper than the cheapest knee surgery.
Jax-- that totally makes sense-- seems like leathers are really the way to go, with strategically placed caps... don't sound like a 40mph bodyslide would be too cool in jeans and knee pads....or shorts ewww

For downhill, you want a motorcycle helmet!! Nothing less! These things are built for high speeds, and the pros wear them for a reason!
I'd wear one, but I don't have the money.

i was just thinking that i could use my snowboard/ski helmet for downhill. they're designed to take the punishment of people hitting trees on ski slopes, why not rolling on concrete?

Most of them are BMX helmets with warm stuff inside.
