I've shortboarded for about 9 years and I just got my first longboard a couple days ago, a 40 inch kracked skulls schimitar with lime bigzigs and for the past 3 days all I've been doing is longboarding and I woke up today with a pain in my ankle, it hurts to even walk. I think it's tendonitis. I've been walking like a pirate with a peg leg, I pretty much just drag my one foot.
Can anyone recommend anything? Are the braces I can get at department/grocery stores just as good as the name brand ones like protec? I'm going to hobble into my skate shop later to see what they have, if anything.
I'm also going to try new shoes and I'm going to stay off it for a week... it's going to be hard though. I'll probably paint my board and sew up all the holes in the asses of my jeans I've been getting the past few days.
Re: Does anyone wear an ankle brace while they skate?
The pain is pretty normal in the beginnig, I had it too when I started, staying off for some days helps.
I tried an ankle brace for a few days, and it felt better, but in the end, it was letting it heal was the best solution. For me it was the achilles that hurt in my pushing foot.
Re: Does anyone wear an ankle brace while they skate?
When I first started skating I had a plastic 70's makaha with worn out bushings and no grip tape. Yea, I pretty much destroyed both ankles in the first month because my feet would slip right off the board. Now I only longboard, and my ankles still bother me sometimes so I wear those neoprene ankle braces from walmart. They are comfortable and feel like socks, you just have to loosen your laces to get your shoes on. They keep my ankles pretty solid, no rollovers yet. I also have deep pain in my upper ankle/lower claf from pushing. It comes and goes. I do leg presses and calf extensions in the gym and I seem to be getting better.
Re: Does anyone wear an ankle brace while they skate?
Thanks, I guess I'll just stay off it and see how it does before I spend $20 on a protec ankle brace.
It's not my achilles that hurts it's on the outside of my ankle.
I don't know why this is happening from longboarding, but never happened before..
Re: Does anyone wear an ankle brace while they skate?
i wear one but its because i always twist my left ankle. when i wait for it to heal i feel like im getting fatter.

Re: Does anyone wear an ankle brace while they skate?
When I 1st started, I had it too (for a few months). My pain was mostly from pushing. Take it easy, wear a brace. I started wearing a brace for the longer sessions, and not for shorter ones. I don't need a brace at all now, I think my ankles had to get used to riding a longboard.
i use a trilock and its pretty amazing and comfortable.http://www.anklebrace.info/bioskin/trilok.htm
i think stink fist is right, the only time it hurts to foot brake for me is when i twisted my ankle. you might even want to see a doctor if i continues to bother you for more than a month.

Nike SB Hi-Top sneakers.
Surprisingly the thing that hurts my nagging ankle most is not skating. It always feels fine if I skate, but when I sit down, drive, sleep at night, or walk ect. it starts to get annoying or hurts.

Re: Does anyone wear an ankle brace while they skate?
Highly recommend the Active Ankle brace - fits in a shoe, easy to use and it provides enough protection to prevent further injury while still letting the ankle move and strengthen up. You don't want to lock it down, it will end up weaker and more prone to problems. Used it after years of ankle problems and now pretty much pain and problem free.
Re: Does anyone wear an ankle brace while they skate?
Thanks for the advice.
I'm pretty sure I didn't twist it. I've had tendonitis in my wrist before and it feels like the same thing. It's feeling a lot better tonight after icing it all day and taking ibuprofen, but it's still a lot bigger than my other ankle.
Those braces are kind of expensive, but I guess it'll be worth it to not have to deal with this again.
Re: Does anyone wear an ankle brace while they skate?
Coming back from a tiny fracture in my ankle, I wore a slim neoprene brace made by McDavid. A lot of professional athletes wear their products. You can get them at most sporting goods stores. The brace I got simply slips on w/ no straps and helped my weak ankle, cost around $10.
this site shows some good exercises that help strengthen the ankle

I do.
Broke my ankle a few years back, and tore a ligament in my other ankle last year.
I skate with TWO braces.
Get an ACE brace... I have ACE and Everlast, but I recommend the ACE.
It's much more supportive.
Re: Does anyone wear an ankle brace while they skate?
I agree with wearing high top shoes... or a light brace because from my experience of spraining both my ankles( 3 times each) from sports (soccer, bball, vball) you dont want to be wearing a brace maybe light support but thats it because your ankles will adjust to u wearing a brace/active ankle, etc. and u will be more dependent on them, so when u dont wear them u ankles wont be as strong... IMO when u sprain or twist ure ankle stay off it and if u wear a brace wear it but dont keep wearing it after its healed to the point wear u can board without it.. cuz ure ankles are weaker even after they heal so excercising them and giving them a good strong workout will keep u going more than waering an active ankle for so long and then the day u dont where them u break ure SH** again...soo bike jog walk and go crusing on ure board...thats a good enough workout...but obviously dont push yourself.... just dont get dependent on them... unless u have really crappy ankles that snap like toothpicks....see a doctor....haha i dont mean to sound like im a pro at this...but just lookin out for fellow fish.... im studying to be in sprts medicine/physical therapy thats why this is all in my head...
Re: Does anyone wear an ankle brace while they skate?
Well, I've been thinking about getting some ankle braces for park riding for a couple weeks now. Just ordered a set of 661 Race Brace Pro's for $25 each. Rolled my ankle good 2 days ago, and wished I had bought these alittle earlier. Here's photos of the damage... I read this thread just hours before hurting my ankle on Tuesday. BTW my helmet saved me again (I got a minor concusion), side of my head still hurts 2 days later!
Re: Does anyone wear an ankle brace while they skate?
I've worn a knee brace no problem
