Default Tips on wrist protection, anyone?

Hey everyone,

I spent all of last summer in a cask due to a broken wrist, because that ONE time I didn't wear my protection, I fell (thank you Murphy' law). Since then I've always worn my protection, but every so often I fall on that same wrist again, as was the case yesterday... and it still hurts like hell, so it might be broken again (allthough I'm still hoping it's just a bad sprain). This time I even broke my wrist guard!

Anyway, since I was wearing protection, and still hurt my wrist reallly badly, could anyone give me some tips on what to look out for when buying wrist guards and which ones are good? Price doesn't matter in this case. Any other ideas are always welcome as well.

Thanks!

I'd like to know the same, since I broke my wrist end of August.

Though, no wrist guard is a sure preventative.

what kind of riding are you doing? cos most of the time its due to how u fall. wrist injuries occur because of the sudden jolt when landing on ur palms, which is often avoided when wearing slide gloves. with the slippery plastic on the slide gloves you don't get any of that jolt, but maybe you do with the wrist guards.
have u ever thought of making or buying a pair of slide gloves to fit over ur wrist guards as extra protection? that would help eliminate any friction between ur palms and the road.

Get the S-One Damage Control wrist guards! They are very beefy, give excellent support with comfort. They are pretty durable and are sold individually (around $35 each from Daddies). They have already saved me at least once from a trip to hospital.

After having had wrist surgery I'll take a broken arm any day.

I am by no means an expert at falling or sliding - but if you want to try to slide in an effort to reduce the strain on your wrist, some people have made their own gloves with wrist guards The Definitive Slide Gloves Thread

Although I'm not sure if straight out falling can be transferred into sliding.

Did you have to do any physical therapy for the wrist once the cast came off? Sounds like it was pretty bad if you were in a cast for the entire summer. Hope your wrist isn't broken!

i broke my scaffoid bone as well this summer in June and had to be put in a splint for a month, followed by a full arm cast for another month. i got lucky tho because typically with that injury they follow up the month of a full arm cast with a month in a short arm cast. so id definitely vote broken arm over broken wrist any day. i know there has to be some good/effective wrist guards out there somewhere. i saw a guy at the glendale skatepark a month or two ago and he had this huge, beefy leather wrist guards that looked solid but i forgot to ask where he got em...soo im definitely interested in seeing what this thread produces...

Good wristguards will have hard splints on the palm and back of the hand. Do not use them w/o the back splint unless you like breaking your wrist. As has been stated, it's much better to break an arm than a wrist.

If you want to use wristguards under slide gloves, you can remove the palm-side splint, as the pucks will act as splints. It limits your movement, but some of us have no choice when it comes to protection.

I speak from experience.

Good thing they didnt give me anything like that Mark.. I'd a been tweakin.. adjustin.. thinkin I can do this waay better.. lol

But to the OP.. I only seen these cause I use the HillbillyProtection Impact shorts.. (best padded shorts on the market hands down) but they make a glove-wrist guard that you could probably put pucks on as well..

Hey, thanks for the reponse everyone.

I was actually just cruising on the sidewalk, but since a car was parked on it I had to change to the bike lane. While I was looking back to see if anyone was coming, I failed to spot a crack in between 2 tiles on time, so my wheel got caught and got jammed in. So I got thrown off the board quite hard and landed on my wrist which I stretched out to break the fall in a reflex. I've been wearing the most common type of wrist guards you can find at most sports shops and they could never really convince me that the were absolutely safe. But, already quite few alternatives have been presented here already!

Anyone know if those flexguards by flexmeter are any good? They say you can wear them under your gloves when snowboarding, so I guess they's fit under slide gloves as well, right?

How long did you have that thing in your arm??? All you silverfishers always say "just practice and fall a bunch of times and you'll learn to _______" Maybe falling so much isn't such a good idea...?

Is it only the boys that get injured so bad or do the girls get injured just as much?

Hey, great news for myself: It's not broken, hurrah!

Last time I didn't have to do any revelidation after the cask was removed. They just said "come back if it still hurts after three months". They didn't say "If it hurts AGIAN..."

Anyway, I already ordered one of those S-one damage controls for my left arm. It'll be happy iguess

Thanks for all the advice!

@Mile_high_mark: What did you do to deserve THAT contraptioin on your wrist? Never seen anything like it before... How long did it have be on there? And finally, does it still hinder you?

I will always swear by Pro-Designed Wrist guards. They make top-notch equipment all around (I just started wearing a pair of elbow pads) but the wrist guards are one thing I would NOT go cheap on.

I'm on my second pair - they will wear out, but I was learning how to slide in them as well. (Melted some pucks on)

With these I took some molten puck plastic and added some mass on the sides of the spoon before I glued some heavy duty velcro over-top.
I wear Mechanix gloves with velcro attached under the wrist guards and attach a nice big puck to both of um.

The gloves themselves are tearing up quickly. I'll be getting some nice form-fitting leather ones by spring....

(Pictures when I get a chance.)

Just to be clear: Your sitting in front of your computer - suggesting that other people sitting in front of their computers - ought to be exercising their wrists?
