    Default Wrist guards?

I need to get some protective gear before I learn to ride. I have been eyeballing the triple 8 3 pack on Amazon.

Question is. Is the solo wrist guard style wrist guard enough for me as a beginner? Or should I go for the triple 8 wrist guard with built in glove/gauntlets and get the knee/elbow pads separate, or just get the 3 pack?

It all depends on the type of skating that you intend on doing. My preferance is to wear wrist guards while skating transitions (skatepark, ramps, bowls, ect..) and use only slide goves when skating downhill, garages, cruising, carving, and of course sliding. Thats what works for me.

I'm not sure what type of skating I'll be doing. Probably mostly cruising.

I too have been eyeballing the 3-pak of Triple 8, and it seems to be a good buy of pads that a lot have rated above Pro Tech. Probably not a bad investment to see what you need/want before spending top dollar.

If you don't mind an old beginner weighing in, I'd go for everything you can wear. When I fought in the SCA (full armor, full speed) our advice to new fighters was: wear all the armor you can, and as you get better you can drop what you don't need/where you don't get hit.

As a rank beginner to longboarding, I will be wearing some kind of glove, elbow and knee pads, wrist guards (really saved me snowboarding) and a helmet. I don't heal as quickly as I used to and have enough broken bones already; and this is just for cruising and carving. As I get better balanced on the board, I am sure I will drop most items except the helmet. Sure it is more money to outlay now, but I can always use or hand them down to another beginner.

    Cheers,
Thanks for the tip buddy. I plan to wear a pair of gloves over my wrist guards. Elbow and knee pads, and my helmet of course. There's no shame in being safe and looking out for your well being.

I look at it this way, the more gear I wear, the more confident I will be that I won't get ravaged by asphalt, the more confidence I will have in trying new things, the easier I will learn without hesitation.

I'll get that 3 pack when I can bum some money off someone.

    Update on these pads.

I wasn't too sure they were Triple 8 when they arrived as the logo is Eightball, but it seems they are perhaps a lower-end style of Triple 8.

They are definitely not rugged enough for the park, but should be fine for cruising and learning to longboard; for the price they are not a bad deal for the novice. One item of note, the wrist guards will not fit under any of the leather gloves I own, and must be worn on top; your mileage might vary depending on the type of glove you use.

I will give another review after I wear them this weekend (hopefully -- semester finals), but right now and for the price, they seem good enough to protect me as I begin riding.

    All the best,

    All the best,
Sweet. Thanks for that man. I will be looking into these when I replace my Giro.
