Re: Best looking and high quality helmet to cruise around...
Assuming you are looking for a half shell, you should look at the Bell Faction and the Giro Flak. They are basically the same helmet (Bell owns Giro) with some aesthetic differences. They are made to be Skate/BMX/Dirtjump helmets, meaning that they bicycle safety certified. This means they provide much better protection in the event of a big impact because of the large amount of hard foam on the inside of the plastic shell. I picked up the Flak a couple months ago and so far I'm loving it. It comes with a bunch of different foam pads so you can get just the right fit. Where ever you find a helmet online, just google discount codes for that site and you can probably get at least 10% off.

Bell Faction - Bell Helmets - Faction

Google shopping will help you find the lowest prices.
EDIT: this thread has some really good discussion on a ton of different helmets - Are protecs safe?

Re: Best looking and high quality helmet to cruise around...
I love my Protec Classic Skate, 2 stage foam, which means it's not quite as safe but it's much more comfortable and will protect you in most falls. I really don't like super hard foam helmets, I bought a new snowboarding helmet in early 08 with hard foam, smacked my head hard on some ice while wearing it and while it may have helped a bit, I still got a minor concussion and a massive headache for a week straight. I feel like softer foam would've probably absorbed a little bit more impact instead of just translating it straight to my skull, but I don't really know. The hard foam in that helmet cracked in two places from that fall, so I'll need a new one for next season...
Anyways, you can't go wrong with Protec helmets, they're made for sports like BMX and skateboarding, they're lightweight, and fit well.
EDIT: I had a Giro Flak for most of last summer until I broke the shell and foam falling at 35 mph. Saved my cranium, but I wasn't a fan of the fit and bulk of the helmet. I prefer my lightweight, low profile Protec.

my protec is anything but lo profile. i noticed bern helmets are slimmer, but if youre gonna wear a helmet, who really cares how slim it is.

Re: Best looking and high quality helmet to cruise around...
just got myself a Giro Flak. I really love it, it's lightweight, looks pretty cool (matt black with lightnings-can it be any cooler?) and has soft padding to dampen the initial blow in the event of a fall/crash and the hard foam for harder crashes.
Does my head look big in this?

superlight looks awesome, but its kind of on the expensive side.. bell faction looks similar and you can get it for around 20-30 bucks. rei has coupons for 1 item often and they stock bell factions

i'll put my vote in for the triple8 brainsaver. very comfy, but the best part is the wicking liner that keeps the sweat out of your eyes.

As noted above, several Pro-Tecs meet the same standards as the Faction and Flak...
