I've honestly never really understood elbow pads. Even while learning slides, I've never managed to fall on my elbows. Knees, absolutely. Head, occasionally. Hands, most definitely. I've even managed to skin my forearms. I'm definitely not saying elbow pads shouldn't be worn, but I'd rank them pretty low in terms of essential pads for skating.
Anybody have any counter evidence? I'm really curious if other people have damaged their elbows (apart from breaking them by falling on their hands, which seems much more likely).

Considering how scuffed up my elbow pads are, I'd say they've done me a lot of good. For example, @ :53 here:
While they've mainly been put to use park skating, they've also come in handy for a few slalom slams. In each of those cases, I got thrown with no warning, and who knows how you'll land. I've got a pretty odd looking scar on my left arm, from road rash I got between the straps of my elbow pad, back in the old WLAC days. And my right arm doesn't fully straighten, thanks to a good slam I took in a pool back in '79 (not wearing pads)

Re: No pads/helmet club
My buddy Mark seems to ONLY fall on his elbows. Every time we skate he does a couple or runs, falls on his elbows, then remembers his pads in the car. They are SO scarred.

I do like those sick motorcycle helmets that speed board dudes rock. Those are most ill.

Why don't you guys just get together and drink some poisoned koolaid, you'd save the taxdollars a lot of money if no one had to try and save your life.

it's an even tougher dilemma when its not your choice. say if I did wear a helmet and took all precautions and still got taken out by a car, mashing half my brains and becoming tube-ridden for life...my thoughts turn pretty morbid.
but to NOT wear a helmet and be rendered completely dependent on family? that's just ###### selfish.
if only one smart kid out of the hundreds of douchebags get the message, its worth it.

Re: No pads/helmet club
not that it matters but i was a shortboarder for 10yrs and the only pads i had then was shoes, now those are optional. then again i never were any protection when i trained in stick fighting, broke every safty rule in the construction industry for 15yrs,and i prefer to have a go at the ladies beraback.
