I could be wrong, maybe there's a legal beagle around to confirm or deny, but if you were appropriately and completely protected and got taken out by a cage and ended up in the vegetable bin (or dirt nap), I'd think your family would stand a better chance of suing the hell out of the offender. Otherwise the defense team could say you wouldn't be permanently brain damaged or dead if you'd have had a helmet and pads on. bs but still might raise enough doubt to reduce the amount they'd have to pay.

got a point there, but wearing all the right gear doesn't excuse poor decision making either. i could be completely protected, then throw myself out in front of a car -- that doesn't mean I had the right to sue someone!!! besides, I think frivolous lawsuits are a dickhead american thing so i don't generally encourage that line of thought unless you're truly wronged.
either way, it also doesn't change the fact that your family has to take care of you the rest of your life, which is really my point about morbidity and at least being responsible enough to TRY not to put family in this predicament.

Re: No pads/helmet club
my helmet and poly carb body suit looks ridiculous. like a weak astronaut.
and they SAVED MY LIFE! my helmet on my wall has a HUGE chunk missing from the base of the skull. The suit was shredded 36 hours after it arrived.
don't be a fool.
Head trauma is the LEADING cause of DEATH and disability among young men.
from the National Head Injury Foundation:
The peak age for Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is between 15 and 24 years. The reason for this is that men are more likely to engage in activities that make them more vulnerable. It is estimated that between 50%-70% of TBIs are the result of road traffic accidents, cars crashes, motor bikes, push bikes. Motor vehicle insurers know that men are more likely to make a claim than women as a result of accidents, hence premiums are often higher for men under the age of 30 or sometimes 40+.
sound like anyone you know? 15 and 24. wonder who's on the 'fish....

lemme get this straight. You don't want to look like a retard when you skate so you don't wear a helmet and risk looking like a retard permanently. Weird.

well in that case we all need to have full protection on all the time, say walking across the street, walkin up the stairs and any other activity the there is a chance that you could get hurt

Re: No pads/helmet club
if u wear a helmet you are more likely to slam your head when you fall because of the extra weight on you head

hmmm, it depends on how you fall really, if you fall hard enough, your neck muscles are probably not strong enough to hold your head up from hitting the ground (with or without a helmet), there is alot of force transferred to your neck when you fall.

Re: No pads/helmet club
We choose what we ride, why not choose what we wear?!? Groms wear pads and helmets, and they end up becoming older skaters. Regardless of what parents "make" them do or what events require protective gear, when we're skating in the street or at the park it is our choice. It's up to the individual to make the right choice. If you choose not to wear pads or helmet, you know the possible results. Best of luck that you don't suffer any major injuries. It's part of the freedom of skating. I don't always wear my gear and I've suffered the consequences on a couple of occasions and I've been skating for 25 years. I'm blessed that I haven't had any major injuries.
Humorously enough I'm returning a helmet today to purchase a new one (found a better price on a better helmet) and since I purchased a new board this week I figured I'd pick up some new gloves and knee pads as well (the extra money fairy visited this week!). Does that mean I will be wearing them always? No. However I am aware that I probably should. Hell, I'm 36 and I don't heal as quickly anymore. But it doesn't slow me down and I am more aware now (that I'm older) of my mortality. I'd like to die doing what I love, but not anytime soon!
Funny to see that the same things we argued about being "cool" or what made you a "poseur" 20 years ago are the same today. Some things never change I suppose.

This comment reminds me oh too much of peoples reasons against seat belts & air bags.
Both of which in certain instances have done more harm that good. These cases are relatively rare (I don't have actual statistics). I think we can agree that in the vast majority of cases these safety devices are good thing.
The excuse that without a helmet you'd never hit the ground is not a suitable excuse. If your head is going back not having a helmet will not save you from not hitting your head at all. The neck muscles are not overly strong. The extra weight of the helmet (1-2 lbs) mean you may hit your head a little harder, but the helmet will more than make up for the impact.
only concern i have about a heavy helmet on my neck is getting whipped! (similar issue to high speed car crashes.. body stops but your head doesn't). That is why most helmet are designed to be weighted appropriately and not make you into a bobble head.
I also agree that everything in life is a calculated risk. Never getting out of bed would greatly reduce the length of your life. You only live once and it is best to enjoy it, so if wearing a helmet somehow ruins your stoke then don't wear it (provided you aren't breaking the law because cops can bust the stoke even harder). But if wearing a helmet ruins the stoke of skating I'd argue something isn't quite right. IE maybe you haven't found a suitable helmet.

either way its funny this guy said that. I took a high side crash in the forties on monday and as i posted earlier, my helmet saved MY LIFE!! that being said, all week long i have my neck has been SO F***ING sore from the whiplash of the extra weight... i mean i can't back my car up.... but i kissed the helmet, and its got a place of honor on my wall as long as i DH.
