is this really a statistic or did you pull this one out your ass?
maybe you should watch a few videos of people that have gone retarded and lost the ability to reason because of frontal lobe damage.

Well, you can think of it like this:
Take a spring, and attach an egg to the top. Lightly push on the egg, doesn't quite reach the ground. This can be thought of like a light fall without a helmet, and your head doesn't quite hit the ground.
Now put foam around the egg, and attach it to the end of the spring. Lightly push on it, it taps the ground, but it doesn't take any damage. This can be thought of like a light fall with a helmet, where the little extra weight was enough to hit your head against the ground.
Now put the egg on the spring, but instead of a light push, push it very hard, it will hit the ground, and get smashed. This is like a hard fall, without a helmet.
Now put the egg(a new one.. but with heads you only get one) on the spring, and put the foam around it. It hits the ground, but it survives.
Point being, yes it probably is possible that your head may have a slightly more likely chance of hitting the ground with the weight of a helmet on, but this isn't going to matter when you fall hard, you're hitting the ground with your head either way.
WEAR YOUR HELMET!
I need a new idea for a sig.

Re: No pads/helmet club
When I was younger I thought helmets for just cruising the neighborhood was not needed. I am in my mid 20s and I am getting back into outdoor activities like longboarding and cycling. I went out and bought a helmet ASAP. I do this to protect my brain, and plus it sets a good example for my son. I can't make him wear a helmet if I am not wearing one.
A helmet is alot like a condom, when you need it you will never regret wearing it.

Re: No pads/helmet club
i cant beleive i actually just read all 9 pages of this. but as i did, i can only blame myself.
In my opinion, i wear pads and a helmet because it makes crashing fun. it may sound weird, but a low speed crash, when wearing the right safety gear can be more fun than riding the hill! At my local park i have only seen one other guy wearing pads and a lid, im not going to preach at the guys who aren't, i just cant see the point. but to not wear a lid when they take all of a second to put on is just pure idiocy in my book.

Re: No pads/helmet club
Wow. I'm kinda shocked that this thread keeps coming up. Although I don't where my helmet for every ride, there is really no sound argument for not doing so. I think a good pros vs. cons list shold silence the debate.
Pros
It could save your life
Prevents wounds
Promotes confidence. which increases skill
Grants you access to skate parks
Greatly reduces the risk of collateral damage to loved ones
Wearing one promotes their use
Head injuries are expensive(very much more than the cost of a helmet)
Head injuries are ugly(no play from the ladies)
Head injuries can affect speech(no play from the ladies)
Head injuries can make you stupid(maybe a pro-stupid people have more sex-It's true)
Head injuries limit your ability to do what you love
Etc.
Cons:
Uncomfortable
Mess up your hair
"Make you look gay"(not sure I follow the relationship between smokin poles and wearing helmets but...)
I think thats just about it.

Re: No pads/helmet club
I don't mind people not wearing helmets. What I do mind is people trying to convince themselves that it won't protect you or that you won't fall because your just going on a cruise.
A valid reason to me, for not wearing a helmet, is that you don't care if you die, which I see as a legitimate argument to not wear a helmet.
I really don't care if I die, BUT there's that chance that I won't die. Instead I will be in a wheel chair paralyzed for the rest of my life. I wouldn't even be able to kill myself!
THAT IS WHY I WEAR A HELMET.

The possibility of loosing skin and breaking bones, is something we all accept.
But lets not ruin the impression that we are crazy by giving way to any notion that we are stupid. Wear a helmet.
for the win

Re: No pads/helmet club
I used to think I didn't need a helmet or pads 'just for cruising around'. Now I always wear at least an ordinary skate helmet, which I've sprayed white coz it's so bloody hot here, and slide gloves.
I think that doing DH has distorted my sense of speed, and I'm not even that fast. What I regard as a slow speed that I would use to skate with out gear, is now upwards of 15mph.
I fell the other day after a pendy slide, at what could have been no more than 15mph, and hit the ground so hard one of my slide pucks detatched itself and I smacked the chin bar of my helmet on the ground before I'd even realised I'd fallen. You don't have to be going fast to hit your head hard, just falling at an odd angle will do it.
And another thing........ the whole philosophy of not falling is staying calm, relaxed and stress free. Almost negating the possibility that falling even exists. I for one don't like pain, and I can't get my mind where it needs to be to skate at my best if I know that when I fall off it's gonna hurt, a lot.
As for the 'gay' comment, are you surpressing your inner feelings a little too much? Is there something you really need to admit to yourself?

Re: No pads/helmet club
i always ride with a helmet, but slide gloves can also be a necessity. i have fallen approximatley 4-5 times since i started longboarding. (jan 2009) 4 times i fell i was just cruising around my neighborhood and b/c of constant house building, i tripped over rocks in the street dragged out by trucks and what not. every time i fell i scraped up my palms.
slide gloves= catch yourself at slow speeds so you dont look stupid comin home with bloody hands for only going 9mph.
havnt fallen on my head yet but im sure its bound to happen. wear a helmet!

Re: No pads/helmet club
If people show up to sessions without helmets then they don't get drives to the top of the hills. Simple. I'm not going to ruin my session by stopping to take some asshat to the hospital.

Re: No pads/helmet club
Personally, for me:
Helmet: 100% of the time, althought sometimes when i am just zipping to class and back i dont take it (it feels weird not having it though)
Pads: when im trying to learn new slides or im bombing some gnarly hill. there is no way id ever bomb witout pads and a helmet!
Wear a F###### Helmet!
