Re: Just sent this to bell... Hopefully something good comes from it.
IMO, the Bell Drop is honestly safe for DH.
For one, if a Charly is safe enough, the Bell is.
For two, the helmet is rated for "downhill mountain bike racing"... That and freeriding are what I did with my life before I discovered downhill skating, and let me tell you those guys hit 50-60 MPH on their rigs just like we do... except they catch air, are surrounded by (and ride over/around) gnarly rocks, trees, branches, etc... not to mention dropping a 20ft ledge is riskier than going 40 on a longboard. I wouldn't say that speedboarding is more dangerous than what downhill MTB racers are doing.
I own a Drop and compared to all the fullface helmets I've owned (other MTB, MotoX, Snomobile helmets) I feel safest in it. It's light, comfy, and feels durable as hell in your hands.
edit: Mark, Tara is a good example to bring up, sadly. I had a buddy who was at that race... Right around the time I stopped downhilling actually. Longboarding ate my life...

You might want to check your history again!
The history of the mountain bike includes contributions from cyclo-cross in Europe, the Roughstuff Fellowship in the UK. The mountain bike was created in California. It was a modified heavy cruiser bicycles used for freewheeling down mountain trails in Marin County, California. The 2007 documentary film, Klunkerz, looks at this period of off-road cycling in detail. However, it was not until the late 1970s and early 1980s that road bicycle companies started to manufacture mountain bicycles using high-tech lightweight materials. Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, mountain biking moved from a little-known sport to a mainstream activity.

mountain biking is pretty dangerous and all but not really anywhere near speedboarding.

I don't see the point in argue witch sport is the most dangerus.
Bu I can tell you this. In the time I've been downhill skateboarding The following helmets have I used.
Grit-X
Icaro Skyrunner
Charly No limit
sixsixone comp
Bell drop
The one that feels most safe for me is the bell drop and it is my latest and when this one kraches I will buy another one. the best helmet of them all.

QFT refers to quoted for truth, remarking upon the perceived validity of the original poster's post.

if you do not feel the bell drop is safe enough, buy a motorcycle helmet. many dhers choose the dop because it has multiple safety ratings exceeding the requirements for dh biking, it is lighter than motorcross and motorcycle helmets, and it has more visibility. at 40-50 mph, i trust my drop. if i ever exceed 60 consistently, i will consider the afx-ds 37, because those are motorcycle speeds.
saying downhill skateboarding is by far more dangerous than downhill biking is a newb idea; sorry. it comes from going down a hill at 20 on a carvy setup and getting speed wobbles and bailing, then comparing the situation to maryhill. the two are not comarable based on equipment, protction, and experience. the idea of skateboarding down a hill at 60mph seems inheretly retarded, yes, but in practice it is not. you may understand as you progress, but for now just trust silverfish.
