good argument ftw

The uncool factor of helmets is somewhat helped by stickers, btw. my halfshell is plastered with them

High visibility gear seems to be an important part of the safety arsenal that boarders are forgetting.

Around here, Its not uncommon to see cyclists wearing a bright green/orange vest, and you even occasionally see a motorcyclist sporting high visibility gear.

But outside of my own group ive never seen a boarder with high visibility jacket.

You all should at least OWN one of these.

I wear a helmet no matter what. Why? Because I skate for my own enjoyment and I like my health just the way it is. So I could care less what someone thinks of me wearing one. There are a lot of younger skaters around here that don't wear any protective gear. They will learn their lessons the hard way. I won't preach to them. But I can at least be a positive model by wearing mine. I'm too old to care if I look silly to someone else. Well... I actually think it IS cool to wear one.

I guess it is similar to smoking.
People know the danger but they just don't care. I like skating without a shell, and nothing you or anyone says will change that.
Also I'm insured for brain damage. It is called euthanasia.
If it is my time it is my time. I may change my view if I get kids.

Ok,maybe the brain you aren't protecting is yours. But what if you die? What will your family say at your funeral? "Joseph was a great, but really great longboarder. He died because he was stupid and didn't want to wear a helmet."

Actually this made me remember a Rambo scene, very cool:

Well I'm sure they will be sad, but it is my choice. Just like someone said earlier about not caring what people think if they wear a helmet, I don't care about people who think I SHOULD wear one.
I know you all mean well but I just don't care

I dont follow this logic. what reason do you have for not wearing one? sure it's your decision, but why not wear a helmet? not "i don't feel like it," because when you put the slightest amount of thought into that statement it makes no sense given the risk.

I'll venture a guess that it's the cool factor, which is unfortunate because the more people not wearing helmets the less cool they become. I still struggle with feeling uncool with a helmet, but i tell myself its worth it because I'd rather live. dying in a way that could have been avoided does not count, IMO, as "if it is my time it is my time."

I don't think cool has anything to do with it. Look in the magazines or on TV. The majority of the Pros bombing hills or tearing up parks are wearing helmets. Those guys are cool to me. Not because of the helmets but because they are great skaters. But it shows that helmets are used and people do care. I look at it like this. Wear one if you want. Don't if you don't want to. One thing that I have noticed though is that the older majority wear them. I guess we feel we have more to live for lol. The people that say they don't care are usually younger people. That's ok. I thought I was bullet proof in my early 20's too. What I don't understand is this? How does wearing a helmet make you cool or not? I guess I am not so self conscious.

I always wear my helmet. Commuting, cruising whatever. I really like it when there are little kids with their parents and they comment, "see he wears his helmet" I guess I'm a good example.

I went down today and hit my head but luckily I had my helmet on so I didn't get hurt but I did get some road rash on my side and hand which shouldn't have happened, but I was being retarded and only wearing one glove and that one didn't even touch the ground.

I look at it as a choice. If you want to wear a helmet, that's great. If not, thats fine but be careful. I would always recommend someone to wear a helmet even though I have a bad habit of not wearing one. If I am with a couple of friends and we are just cruising, I don't have one on. If I am practicing or learning new stuff, I usually have one on. I don't wear one on all of the hills I go down. It just depends on how steep they are and how much speed I will get.

There is no real logic. Just like with smoking.
We just don't care if it is dangerous.
I feel a helmet looks bad and feels bad and is very impractical.

There are no reasons not to wear a helmet, just like there are no reasons to smoke.
There is also no reason not to wear a helmet ever singel second of every singel day.
But people like what is bad for then and that is the bottom line.
And no amount of helmet nazis will change that

Fair enough if you don't want to wear a helmet but give a tiny thought about those around you. Not much fun if you mom has to look after you the rest of your life, should you be unlucky..........
