Upper body, under leather protection.
So i recently fractured my shoulder and am in the process of letting that heal up, and am interested in protecting my shoulder and collar bones, as well as possibly spine protection. My leathers do not have padding in the shoulders but do in the back. I have found some shorts Ill be getting for thigh, hip, and tailbone padding for wearing under my leathers. Does anyone know of any good, affordable garments similar to the EVS shorts im looking at for upper body protection? Im really looking for light, thin padding, its better than nothing.

Also, has anyone gotten shoulder/collarbone fractures from impacting them directly into the ground, or slamming into a guardrail/car/tree/waht ever? Pads or no pads?

Re: Upper body, under leather protection.
i think one thing that dhers have not given much thought to is spine protection. i know i didn't. if we sever our spine, we're dead. this is more of a risk than you think because we do skate open, mountain roads, so there are A LOT of guadrails and trees. and if you get lucky and miss one of those, you could have a long drop down the side of the hill. i know all too much about these things so trust me. i fell at very high speeds and even though i had helmet and leathers on, my spine was exposed. i ended up sliding into a guardrail and kept going off a small hill and landed in a gulch. not sure which did it, but ended up with some shattered vertebrae and just BARELY kept my spinal cord intact. collar bones, shoulder dislocations, ribs...those all heal over time but you should think of your spine the same way you think of your head. people are sooooo adimant about wearing helmets, but give no thought to something just as important. think about it guys.

D-dub, i totally feel you. Ive got back pad on my leathers but not too sure how well it protects against hard impacts. Hard armor i think would work better, would consider wearing it outside the leathers as well as Ive seen this done. The thor pressure suit look too bulky to fit UNDER my leathers.

Re: Upper body, under leather protection.
Alright well I was able to find some good results by searching 'protective clothing' on google. The company McDavid has released HexPad clothing, which seems pretty legit and would fit well under leathers without being cumbersome. Check it out.

Re: Upper body, under leather protection.
if you go to that timeship site, they've got a pretty legit spine protector just under the pressure suit. i think its the third one down. i like that its got shoulder straps so it can be worn even without leathers. the best i've been able to find have only had waist straps.

Re: Upper body, under leather protection.
The pressure suit looks like it works, however it would def NOT fit under my leathers.
D-dub would you wear the back protector under or over leathers? Were you wearing one at the time of your crash? If not, would one have protected your back from injury?
I have some shoulder pads from a textile jacket I attempted slipping under my leathers, they are about a half inch thick and were way too bulky and restricted my arm movement a lot. Im really looking for just some light padding and I think the hexpad shirt is what im going to go with. 9mm pad thickness built into underarmor type of garment.

i would wear it under, so when you fall on your back 1) you dont grind down the plastic and 2) you can let the leather do its job and help slow you down. i wasn't. i don't even remember the crash so its hard to figure out what exactly broke it. if i caught some air down the hill and then the impact from that fall broke it, then i don't think it would have helped. but most likely it was hitting the guardrail and it definately would have helped because i didn't hit it dead on and stop. it was more of a glancing blow. i know this because my final stopping place was a good distance off the road.
one thing you should be careful about is restricting arm movement too much. even though 9 mm may not seem like much, it may be enough to limit how high you can raise your arm. when you superman and land on your hands, your shoulder will feel a lot of pressure at that seam if you don't have mobility, and as your arm goes higher, your leathers may force your shoulder out of its socket. just something to consider.

Re: Upper body, under leather protection.
Very interesting info I did not even consider that. My arm movement was noticeably restricted when wearing the thick pads just under my leathers yesterday. I really wish I could try one of those shirts on I found online on to feel how it is. I would think that itll fit OK under my leathers. I may just need to break in my leathers (they are new and were only worn for one day before my injury), they fit so well im not sure if the back protector would fit underneath them. My back is a lot more important than my collarbones IMO, although i have never fallen directly on my back, then again I have never been to 60.

i've never fallen directly on my back either. i was sliding on my side when i hit. this could easily be possible on neighborhood runs at 30-40. there are a lot of curbs, cars, and maybe even a few stone mailboxes around. all it takes is hit to the right spot as you know. another thing that i just thought about is that the spine protector will not limit how much you can bend over but it should limit how much you bend the other way. so if you highside and do a scorpion as i like to call it (superman, chest sticks and feet come up next to your head from your backside) then you wont break it that way. i heard of a guy that had an incident like this.
one thing you can do to get an idea about that hex pad shirt is try and put your leathers on with some folded up socks or something on your shoulders. then see how the flexibility is. think outside the box.

Re: Upper body, under leather protection.
Good call, Ive got some underarmor type garments that fit real tight that i got for my leathers, and Ill try to find some material to mimic the hexpad thickness and stuff them in there. Those brick house mailboxes are intimidating whenver i see them in neighborhoods and have always worried about them. Trick skaters often do the 'scorpion' where there feet just about reach there head from behind and then flip over, lol. Good thinking. For whatever reason I always thought you were dubester, but hes got his own account. Do you ride with those guys in CO?
