Slide gloves that can breathe
So I got my board a couple of weeks ago and have been practicing a ton. Now that I'm getting a bit more serious about skating, some of the hills I'm taking are getting quite intimidating. I definitely need some protective gear. I plan on getting knee pads, a helmet, gloves and possibly elbow pads. The problem is that with all of this extra equipment on me, I'm going to be dying in the summer heat. Can you guys point me toward some more breathable protective gear (specifically slide gloves)?
Thanks in advance

Re: Slide gloves that can breathe
Go to a sports store or some place you can find gloves. Try em out, find out which you like and buy them. Then either buy Black Velvet Sliding Pucks or Mud Slide Pucks.
(or you can buy cutting board, cut it up, and glue/velcro it to the gloves)

I wear a Triple Eight Brainsaver helmet, which is comfy, lightweight, and breathable. It also has terrycloth lining that really helps keep the sweat from dripping down your face. Only downside is that it's EPP, not EPS, so it compromises a bit of protection for multi-impact capability. I think they make an EPS version, too, though.
Elbow pads... I have 187 Pro elbows that I use in the skatepark. They're very protective, but really hot (probably not great for what you're looking for). I used to wear ProTecs and they did the job and were relatively cool. I just generally skip elbow pads, though.
I use 187 Pro knee pads that are really amazing in terms of comfort and protection. These things are very, very well designed. Only problem is that they have a furry inner lining that definitely gets warm. However, I've learned to tolerate the heat, as the protection they offer is well worth the slight discomfort. If you're dealing with 90+ degree weather, you want to look elsewhere.
Finally, gloves. I really like fingerless gloves for the extra mobility and ventilation. I made my own using Harbinger weightlifting gloves, and they work perfectly! Previously, I've used Gravity fingerless, Lush, and Loaded. Lush are extremely warm (great for cold weather). Loadeds are well ventilated on the top half, but not the palm side; they get hot when you walk up the hill, but they cool down really fast if you hold your hands out (pucks facing uphill) for a few seconds as you skate. Gravity fingerless are comfy and fairly well ventilated. Kind of the same deal as with Loadeds -- they get hot when you're just sitting around, but they're not bad while skating.
Hope that helped a bit!

What's the difference between EPP and EPS? The brainsaver sounds like a good fit but I'd like to know the difference in protection before committing myself to it.

Yeah, I was thinking about getting the loaded because they looked like they were well-ventilated on the backhand side. I was also considering fingerless gloves, but tbh I think that I'd be too scared to rip the skin off of my fingers to use those; if I'm going to be protecting my hand I might as well protect my whole hand instead of endangering the fingers. I'll make my own gloves as a last resort, or if I find that gloves are too expensive for my tastes.

Those do look cool (and match my board ) and look like they're pretty cool. I'll definitely check those out too.

Re: Slide gloves that can breathe
Go with a fingerless. Much better on the ventilation, and finger flexibility during tricks.

"What's the difference between EPP and EPS? The brainsaver sounds like a good fit but I'd like to know the difference in protection before committing myself to it."
EPP is expanded polypropylene, it recovers its shape and propertys quickly after being hit.
EPS is expanded polystyrene, it can absorb a lot more energy before transfering it to your brain - all motorbike helmets use it and it is only good for one hit.
Basically one is good for one big-hit, the other for lots of taps.
it's also worth noting that some co's use the term "hard-hats" to describe EPP lined lids, they deliberately decline to actually call them helmets...

Re: Slide gloves that can breathe
What i have found helps with homemade gloves is just small vertical slit right in the middle of the back of the glove.i probably wouldnt do it with anything you buy but with like 6 dollar slide gloves that are just going to get super toasted anyways it makes them much cooler and only decreases their lifespan by very little.you can always just sew it back up if its a problem

Re: Slide gloves that can breathe
motion gloves breathe pretty well for a full fingered glove and they're cheap
just change out the pucks they suck

yeah what he said, you cut 1 or 2 small slits, and then what I did was sew them up w/o tightening the string so they're held together loosely. you can make a couple slits that way. I've had a lot of practice repairing clothes so I'm pretty comfortable with a needle and thread, but if you haven't before make sure someone who's done it explains the right way to do it.

Re: Slide gloves that can breathe
I guess someone deleted my post about breathing gloves with lungs. D:
But just watch out not to put your fingers on the floor when using a fingerless glove! It sucks to have a sore finger.

Re: Slide gloves that can breathe
My Mechanix gloves breathe really well. they've got a type of mesh between the fingers that vent really well and stay pretty cool. I've been really impressed with them
they come in a fingerless version too for even more ventilation
PM me for details
