    Default Correct Way to Fall

    So I know you can't really expect when you fall, but what are your techniques to reduce injury. I see a lot of videos where people fall but they simply slide off, like when going around a hairpin. I'm sure it's not fun but it doesn't seem as bad as falling standing straight up and slamming to the ground.

    So what do you guys do to reduce the amount of damage you take when you fall?
    Would you rather eat a hotdog that costs a dollar or a dollar that tastes like a hotdog?

    roll if you can, if i can't roll i try to land on my hands and chest, and avoid my side, cause falling on your hip hurts like a mother

    On you hands and knees. Of course, slide gloves and knee pads makes this much better, and it really isn't that bad, almost kind of fun.

    id rather fall and bruise my hip and suffer maybe a little bit of rash through my jeans then cheese grading my hands, much less my chest

    yup rolling is the way to go....i wouldn't suggest using your hands though just tuck and roll you should be able to its not hard to pull your arms to you chest. you just gotta stop your reflex of sticking your arms out to catch yourself. it works well when your stationary not so much when your moving fast. oh and wear slide gloves if you can you can avoid so many falls/bails with them

    i had an incident which made me hate my slide gloves for a long time. I sucked at footbreaking and had the runs, i couldnt run fast enough and then fell hands first. my hands since i had slide gloves slipped out on me exposing my stomach for the pavement. Getting the wind knocked out of you for a minute sucks

    yeah it does.. happend to me many times when i played football. dude why were you skating when you had the runs if that happens to you again just try and go with the motion of the slide till you slow down enough to stop, but who knows you never fall the same way twice

    its not so much the road rash through the jeans, its the impact of bone hitting pavement that i worry about, but i've had my hands shredded too, so i know how that is

    I'm a big fan of taking as much of the hit on your knees as possible, like the vert guys do. This means wearing kneepads and practicing dropping to your knees as fast/instinctively as you can. Then put your (gloved) hands down for stability and slide it out. Drag some rubber on your toe/foot if you need to, or have the presence of mind.

    If you're not wearing gear, a roll helps with the rash, and if you soften into it right, you can spread out the initial hit and avoid a fractured wrist, dislocated shoulder, or bad hippers. Take aikido or judo. But it still hurts.

    Knees and gloves plus helmet go a long way to preventing injury.

    Thanks for the tips. I just got leathers and it doesn't really make me feel too much safer because I don't really know how to fall yet. I know that when i slide on the ground I will try to quickly get to my knees, but it's the impact that I don't know how to dissapitate. I guess I could put in all the armor that came with the leathers, but then it would restrict my movement.

    Also, are there any videos that just show people falling? Maybe I could learn some tips just by watching.
