I'm looking at getting a board mostly as a commuter but I like in a city with crazy steep hills, meaning I'll need to be able to slide/stop quickly when i get to red lights, stopped traffic, etc. I'm wondering why boards with double kicktails are recommended for sliding? Are they only necessary for real technical slides or are they important to have even if I'm just sliding to control speed? Thanks.
Kicks help keep your feet from sliding off the board. Along with the board's concave they form little pockets over the trucks that keep your feet secure. for advanced sliding they're all but necessary, but you can do basic slides on any board (with any wheels or trucks) so if your main concern is being able to stop when there's a bus crossing the intersection in front of you, you don't need a specialized sliding board.

Kicks are very helpfull, and so is concave but saying that you can still basic to intermediate slides on a Dervish with no concave or kick. And the more you slide your board (what ever board your riding) the better it will become for sliding because the wheels will get worn in more and more. But by the sounds of what your looking for you dont need to get a "special slide board"
