Hey guys, I'm new to these forums and have been longboarding for about 2 months. I've made a lot of progress thanks to this site and these forums so thank you!
My question is: How easy is it supposed to be to power slide?
I try and I try. I've done it successfully about 5 times out of about 50 tries. I just end up going into a hard carve. And this is at 15-20 km/h. I've fallen countless times and I just get back up and keep trying.
I've got an LY Urban Assault with Randal II trucks and 76m Monster hawgs with a duro rating of 84a. I weigh about 165.
1.turn your feet sideways
2.squat as low as you can
3.pick a focal point and dont stop looking at it
4.take your hand and place it so your thumb is facing downhill
5.try to grab the rail with your back hand behind your rear knee
6.put your slide hand down and push it out as far as you can
7.at the same time roll your knees down "trick" (try to toutch your rear knee to your front
truck)
8.you will slide 180 you should still be looking at that point
9.hold the position
10.your board will come back around

I don't have sliding gloves yet. But I'll try out the rest of it for sure.
Thanks.
Also, the wheels are pretty broken in. I've had them for about 2 weeks with 4-7 hours of riding every day.
they are def harder to learn. but hear you go.
1.learn to ride switch
2.bend you knees with most of your weight on your front foot
3.carve as hard as you can healside
4.at the point where you are now facing downhill spring up and rotate your hips and arms
5.SIDE
6.ride it out

Sounds good.
I'll put more action into it with my hips. Thanks again man.
I just learned these on my sliding board. Here was my learning process;
1. Trip up the road to smooth playground asphalt.
2. try little power turns( kick out your back foot on a carve)
3. Wow, that was fun. go faster.
4. realize that a 180 wouldn't send you flying into a flurry of swearing and roadrash.
5. do said one-eighty.
6. go faster.
7. go to fast, crash.
i just learned the powerslide too, my best tip is to find someone who can powerslide and skate with them, you learn so much faster
so this is 180 powerslide frontside, riding regular
put most of your weight into your front foot
and put ur back foot's heel more towards the left rail so you can get more power
do a setup carve (by carving the opposite way you want to powerslide) - it helps alot in making your wheels slide out)
push out hard with your back foot, you should feel the back wheels slide out
at the same time really swing your upper and lower body in the direction you want to go
also turn your head in the same direction, trying turning both your head and arms in 180 degrees (basically try looking back) (once you get it down you wont have to look back, but it'll help you commit)
good place to practice is somewhere with grass, powerslide toward the grass, if you fall you'll fall in the grass
another tip is to practice doing 180 pivots with your board (standing over your truck not on the nose), that helps for getting the feel of the movement ( but i dont think you can do it on your board)

Haha this is all that should be necessary. Im having trouble with this, though. I can slide wth gloves but not powerslide per se. What i can do is one of these- I \ manual on my long ass board (reg stance), rotate the board (still balancing on back wheel) (clockwise) and manual that sh it around 180*, right? whatever thats called, i dunno the effin name.
so I get some good speed and do one of those ^ so hard that the board slides (around 30-40* depending on how hard i do it).
The point is, what is this sht called?
And, it seems like speed & how hard i turn are inversely related. ya dig?
Im working on trying to slide 180* doing that ^...but i dont wanna fall off and smash my head (i go to osu, i already get a lot of #### good/bad about my longboard. "dmn that sht is dope!" or "hey what the fck are you doing, get over here" so wearing a helmet = get a lot of ####. i dont wanna go too hard and smash my headsies (side note can we curse on this sht?).

Yeah, no swearing, it makes you look like you have a small vocabulary. Especially if you are in college. Also, dude, just helmet. Though you would look so cool on life support for traumatic brain injuries.
Basically, kick out your back foot, and just keep sliding. You might need to go faster. And falling won't hurt, you have a helmet and gloves.

but you didn't answer my question, what is the trick called that I described?
Also I went out and did it and I can slide now if I hang my foot a bit over the edge and plant my front foot right near the front of the board. And I disagree about the small vocabulary bit, one can use plenty of swears and still use large words.
having a good vocabulary doesnt mean you use big words its means you use many words.
anyway....
squat when going straight and then unweight when your actually turning/sliding (stand up from squat) and the weight back down at the end of the rotation(squat down again)
