Well you have to be going fast enough to not slide to a stop.

At the top of a hill at a very high speed there's nowhere to go but down.
while wearing a piece of plastic and foam on your head of course.
I charge down the hill make a sharp turn and it is almost as if I enter a trance as and don’t come out of it until I’m either stopped or rolling down the hill again in my usual stance. More speed more magic.
Both are important. If you're not going fast you aren't doing anything special in terms of sliding. Same is true with having the technical knowledge of how to do whatever you want to do. If I had to pick one I'd say speed first.

The whole reason i started sliding was because i live in an area completely surrounded by huge hills and i wanted to be able to bomb them without foot breaking... i didn't even have any tech slides in mind, i just wanted to be able to toeside 180 and coleman to slow myself down so initially it was 100% speed. after i realized how stupid fun it was to bomb hills and bust a buttery double pendy, i've been slowly working towards technique but it for sure follows speed.
technique, just a little because with out it you are going to highside,
then you go faster to get better, then you just start to make it more style-y

Do you factor control into technique? With too much speed you can have trouble maintaining control while attempting technical slides. Not enough speed and you lose the distance required to do styled out tech slides.

I don't know all that many technical crazy spin slides but I loooove doing super fast slides. Standup slides over 20 mph are the shiiiiiiiiiit and 100 foot long colemans are pretty damn fun too.

Actually, I was trying to start a thread that addressed skateboard sliding on a different level, rather than how-to's and specific equipment recommendation. I'm curious how fellow Disciples of Drift might attack a hill, pick a line, or what is going on in their head as the wheels break free. What inspires us to slide? What is it about sliding inspires our daily lives. Hopefully even the frustrated novice could be inspired to change their attitude and approach a hill with a higher frame of mind.
Speed? or Technique?
I intended this title to be a transition into the magician metaphor. Shaman of speed conjure up the forces of momentum and resistance to collide causing a transcendental arc than take the skater to a different plane of existence. Wizards achieve this by casting spells with precise board control. Great sliders are well versed in both casting spells and conjuring the forces of nature.
I want to hear other POV's, the weirder, the wackier, the better and I apologize if this a redundant topic.
