I wish they would have said that there are cheaper beginner alternatives to 500 dollar setups, to make it seem more accessible to people who don't know much about it

Great article. I agree with Tags, wish they would have highlighted that you can get in for far less than $ 500, but good press nonetheless.
Skate 'em if you got 'em,

Re: NYT article on Slalom
The new generation tends to come from enclaves in California, the Pacific Northwest and Colorado.
Well, you know, you only talk to west coast skaters and that's the impression you'll get.
I guess Mike Duquette, Justin Collins, Adam Schwippert and so many more don't yet have an "enclave."
Just because you can take a naked picture of yourself doesn't necessarily mean you should.

Right here.....
I'm 48, I don't plan on quitting slalom. I just recently started getting more serious about slalom, and I'm improving, not aging, or fading... As if some morning, I would wake up, and feel so much different than yesterday, that I would say, "yeah, no more slalom for me..."
I can't see just quitting.....
Now, as far as the "younger generation" I get the feeling that the future looks brighter now than it did not too long ago....More people than the usual friends and family need to see a contest going down, I guess- most people give a "Whoa" seeing a high speed GS run for the first time...
Any coverage is good coverage though, definitely....

but you gotta know it's shining through a crack in the cloud
and the shadows keep falling when johnny comes marching home...

Re: NYT article on Slalom
Wes, when I was contacted by the NY Times writer, I gave him a list of names without any geographical prejudice. Why and who he chose to, or was able to speak with was his decision.

Hey Art,
I wish I could write that well! Matt Higgins, the action sports writer for the NY Times wrote it. Justin is a great guy and a heck of a racer, watched him win the World Hybrid Championship on Saturday.
