Cambrias: Yes or No or ? ?
I keep considering buying a set of Cambrias for TS.
I usually ride MANX and 3DM wheels in 68 & 69MM
Just wondering what everyone's Pros/Cons are for Cambrias.
Thanks

Surly,
I've got Cambrias, regular Avalons, Hot Spots and shaved Avalons. My shaved Avalons do it all for me. The harder lip works better than the Hot Spots and the bigger diameter have better "roll speed" than a Cambria.
It might be my imagination but I swear when I ride the Cambrias and can feel the speed bleed off almost instantly if I don't pump. The Avalons just keep rolling and keep their momentum longer.
If you're already riding a bigger wheel, I'd recommend sticking with it. I don't think going to a smaller one will improve your wiggle through sub-7 foot cones.

Re: Cambrias: Yes or No?
I have a set of Cambrias that I keep as an alternate TS wheel. I like to use Hotspots or 66mm Zigs for tight (or even a Manx or 70mm Zig if thte course is pretty mellow), but when it's crazy tight and steep (a la Cbark) and I find I'm just trying to control speed enough to make it thru, then I break out my cambrias. As I get better at tight, I find I use them less, but sometimes I'm so glad I have them.
I feel more like I do now than I did when I first got here.

Re: Cambrias: Yes or No?
I agree with Muttlips...and I ride Barker courses al the time...Cambrias are a key part of every toolbox...great in the super tight/super steep ts courses where control and acceleration are keys. There are some courses here so tight and fast that 69mm + wheels are hard to get into and out of cones without the nimble turning and acceleration of the smaller wheels...I keep 6 cambrias in the wheel box at all times...2 yellow, 2 green and 2 white....
and my new PAVEL is faster than Wesley
!

The question, though, is if it's fast with YOU on it?
It's kind of sad you threw down the gauntlet and then blame Christmas for having to pick it up.
(There's about 40 skaters in the Southeast who, if they pay attention, have any clue about what we're discussing.)

Re: Cambrias: Yes or No?
Wes If I am going to fly to a race it will be a big race, not some little southern 1 day gig!
and I am willing to wager that my board is faster with me on it than you on yours....
How about we each put up half the cost of a new Pavel...have Don shape it and the winner takes it? then if you can muster up the skill to take me you would have one of the best boards available
stop typing...go skate a Pavel

Re: Cambrias: Yes or No?
Wax,
I already have the best board available.
So, what's in it for me?

Re: Cambrias: Yes or No?
I really like the 66 zig zags for TS, grips and slides better than the cambrias for me this season.
That being said, if I were headed to Colorado any time soon I would remember to put my set of cambrias in my suitcase.

YIKES! Stakes too high for me. I remember reading somewhere that someone proposed that instead of an entry fee, everyone that wants to race puts in 5 cones and the winner takes all the cones.

How about a "claiming rule"? Anyone in the top 5 can "claim" the winner's board for $200 cash. That would sure stabilize the arms race... heh heh... One could adjust the numbers up or down for different classes.
Or how about, the Wax and Wes have to switch boards after racing each lane once, and then race again on the other guy's board (tuning allowed with a wrench, only)? Winner gets 1 Million Dollars and four Pavel or Ick decks, whichever costs more. 8)
Or, how about Tijuana Slalom: the cones are coffee cans of burning kerosene and we throw rocks at the competitors. After the race, the surviving competitors forget their differences over cheap, cold beer and tacos al pastor.
So many options.
