Slalom courses ... "canned" courses
This has been talked about before. But I was thinking that if we could figure
out a good [easy] way to design courses, it would help alot of people that are
new to slalom. I know some guys have said they hate "canned" courses, but
even you could share some of your favorite runs with the rest of the crowd.
Anyone have an idea as to how we can share them here at the fish?
If we figure a good way to do it, I will even take the time to compile
and post them. Yes, MS Excel works for this, but not to post at the fish.

I like this image from chaputs site
you can mix and match to create cool little courses!

i like this idea, of a downloadable image. we need some sort of chart, or "legend"
to point out cone spacing, and offsets. let's say, for instance, that in the image above,
the cones in Section "A" were 6 foot centers with a 1 cone offset, and back to 6 foot centers.
Would each cone need to be marked? And how about the offset?
Like this? [or something else maybe........?]::
.. (6C)
.. (6C)
.. (6C)
.. (6C)
. (6C) / 1OFS-R <---- "6-foot center / 1 cone OffSet-to the right"
. (6C)
. (6C)
. (6C)
Hmmmmmmm........
edit: It would be easier on the brain if the image had A over B, then C starting at the top again, make sense?

I'm guessing those cones are placed six feet apart?

So, does this make any sense at all, or am I just over thinking?
6C = space between cone "Centered"
/ = denotes that an offset is being used.
1-OS-R = 1 cone-width -"OffSet" - Right [looking down the course from the start line]

How about color coding the lines between the cones to signify the spacing between the cones. The cones themselves could also be color coded to denote the offset.

interesting.
however, we should consider that some folks dont have a color printer. so if
they print it out, it wont make sense based on color.
hmmm...

ooooh - I like the color idea, you can tell at a glance what the distance is

Great idea Surly!
We don't even need an image. Just the code listing like you gave. Don't mark each cone, just put the number for the straight ones. Following your example above would give a shorter listing:
- 4(6C)
- (6C) / 1OFS-R
- 3(6C)

ahhhh .... i see now. nice call MIG!! i like the idea of not having an image,
just a simple print out [or written] to carry out to your favorite parking lot.
maybe even add the "at" sign ... @ ... such as:
4@(6C)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
please dont let me complicate this ... it should be easy for everyone.
allright, i'll test this. someone send me a 35 cone course to start with,
and i'll try applying this idea to it.

Exactly!

Even better and easier to understand.!

Well as long as the codes are clearly explained with an example like the image above, it should be pretty easy for everyone...
Make it a sticky in this forum (slalom) with the first post stating the codes with an image example. Than let all the following posts be coded courses with a comment describing the ideal slope for that course (flat, medium, steep, etc...).

I have allways stood at the top of the hill looked down and then start course setting and tweaking. Reason degree of steepness plays a big part in the process when it comes to course setting. Hills are different, degree of steepness are different. Setting courses on flat surface is a totally different story. Just my thoughts on the subject. Your Amigo Eddy Texas Outlaws.

Exactly Eddie. Now, after you have tweaked a course and skated it, you could "can"
it for other folks. Or maybe a month, or year later, when the chalk marks are gone, you
could refer back to your favorite courses.
It might be easier, for some anyway, to write this stuff out starting at the bottom
of the paper, and move up the page, as you move down the course setting it up.
Either way will work.
One thing I thought about with this. I'd love to be able see a comparison of courses
set up in different areas. We may find some interesting differences. When I see footage
of races or sessions, I sometimes wish that I could set that exact course up ... maybe
I am just a nerd after all.

Re: Slalom courses ... "canned" courses
Make a program where you can plot points and you can only exceed certain angles from certain distances. THAT WOULD BE SICK.
