    Default CriddleZine ... Download Here:

    Coneheadz,

Well, after a hard drive crash, a new job, and being 4 weeks behind, here it is.
Download the PDF at our site. It's an 11mb file, so if you are still on dial-up, it
    will take awhile.

    http://www.criddlezine.com/

Hope you enjoy it, thanks for all the support.

My advice would be to limit text to 2-1/2 inch wide.
Check out a newspaper, copy their width.
This has been extensively studied, and it has a serious effect on readability.

I'd also stick to Gothic (sans) fonts for the whole thing. (ariel, century gothic, Helvetica etc)
It's much easier to read, on screen anyway...

If you're not already using Indesign, get it.

    Surly,

It's not quite as bad as Steve says, but some columns and some air* would definetely help readability.

Just looking at the PDF is a bit overwhelming, but if it was printed out and folded in half to 8.5 x 5.5 as the printed edition, its not quite as prone to causing the jiggly eyes. But you do want to avoid huge blocks of words with no breaks. This is a magazine, not an 8th-grade term paper. (re: Fatboy's term paper on slaloming.)

You got a pretty good eye for layout, just a couple of other things: always start a story with a pic. The Texas story with all words and no pics as an intro is a little dull. Also, your PDF spreads are a little whacko. In the future I would suggest either doing 1-page (8.5 x 5.5) pages OR do your spreads of (1,16)/(2,15)/(3/14) etc. If anyone prints out your PDF, folds and collates a booklet they'll go NUTS trying to get it to work.

    Hey, just remember: YOU asked.

*"Air" is any planned open space in a layout to aid in reducing eye strain, breaking up some monotony and using NOTHING as a design element as much as any words or pictures. Think about music: rests are just as important as notes.
Just because you can take a naked picture of yourself doesn't necessarily mean you should.

thanks wes. yup, i did ask for any input, and all of it is more than welcome. i will revisit some of these tips and might even post a new pdf in the next few days.
note: the PDF spread was specifically put together that way for the printer. 8.5x11 pages, in order. i know it's confusing, but apparently their machine does the
magic this way. the other issues were setup in the way you described above ... old school zine printing.

Is Wes the Chaput of layout?

You know I love ya WT even though you filled one of our city trash cans with puke. Now that was punk!

Wes - you didn't like my article? I thought it was at least informative

Nice job Criddleboys, I liked it a lot - Jason, JFA, LUNA, ALL of it!

oh, and I always thought JFA stood for Jody Foster's Army

    Compliments? You expect compliments?

Actually, Ron, I thought it was very cool. I liked the whole magazine. The stories, the use of color and the flow of the layout worked really well. Like I said, Surly and Brent have a good eye.

yes, it does. maybe with the age of the group, brian threw that in for kicks. however, that is the reason i had to leave school that day. because my t-shirt said "Jody Foster's Army" and it had a drawing of John Hinckley on it. I still want to know which one of those things was more offensive to the Principal that day, the name, or the image. [?]
