rear slalom hanger
hey guys, just thought i would ask some input
here are a couple of screen shots from my software program of the rear slalom hanger im working on, its a pretty low profile, rough version, i still have to do some tweaking here and there, but youll get the idea
the axle are going to be attatched by drilling and reaming a 1/2 inch hole in either end of the aluminum, then the steel will be press fit in, and secured by a roll pin, it will then be put in the lathe, where i will turn the 1/2 inch rod, and taper it down from 1/2 inch to 8mm, should be about a 45 degree taper. then threads will be added
the bushing seat is a standard 1 inch hole, but the kingpin and outer seat are both eliptical
the aluminum part of the hanger will be 80mm wide, and the bushing seats on the axles will be 90mm, which is as narrow as you'll be able to run them
anywho, here are some pictures

i have to leave it attatched to the "cage" so that it wont drop out and get a nice big nick from the cutter, but itll be cut free and trimmed.
thoughts, suggestions?

Re: rear slalom hanger
i know its alot like the splitfires and airflows, and everthing else, but why reinvent the wheel...
the main differences will be a fully machined baseplate, and a spherical bearing in the pivot only; a different way of securing the axle; it will be spaceable on the axle from 90 to 95 to 100, maybe even a bit further; and im also working on getting them strength treated in a completely different way that is stronger than heat treatment
so it should be good if i can get it all together
i should have them done by the worlds in skatesville

Re: rear slalom hanger
I don't think you'll want any sphericals in your rear truck, that's just my opinion but I know a lot of guys who ride the same way. Seems pretty narrow for a back truck, too.

i talked to a few really good guys while i was up in ohio, richy suggested a spherical in the pivot only, but not on the kingpin, so thats what i went with, if everyone is against them, i will definatly take them out, or see if i can do two versions to see which is best.
as for the width, i was just guessing after talking to a few people and checking out the current trucks, radikals, gog's, splits, that a spacer adjustable truck that could go from 90 to 100, possibly more, would be a good range for ts, and hs
i appreciate the suggestions, keep them coming, its alot easier to change the design now, than after i start cutting metal

Re: rear slalom hanger
The spherical in the pivot will give you the precision effect you're after. A spherical in the hanger also adds a lot of precision, but at the cost of focused stress on the kingpin. Stick with the pivot only and you're on the right track.

Re: rear slalom hanger
Agreed .......... Chris, yes the back truck should be deadened, but it shouldnt be completely dead...that bearing in the pivot will give it a little life and wont deteriorate like a pivot cup....
Assuming this is going to mount to a reverse kingpin like the latter gen Spiltfires, it wont be anything like the Airflow or TTC......and since they dont make Splits anymore, there's definitely a place in the market for a truck like this, if the cost can be kept reasonably below that of Rad and GOG's.........
As for the width, there's a need for a narrower midpriced rear than the typical one's on the market.....a minimum of 80mm would be good for a front, but going narrower than about 90mm on a rear could get kind of twitchy

...and on the narrow side of things, don't forget to account for the inside lip on
ALL the wheels on the market. i haven't had experienced inside wheel-bite, but i'm certain that it hurts as much as the normal kind.
would that be considered
"switch" wheelbite?

something ive been doing on my trucks lately, is putting a chamfer on the actual ends of the hanger, prevents wheel bite, and looks really smooth. dont forget that the axles are going to come out of the hangers, then taper down to their final size about .1 inch off of the end of the aluminum.
anyways, this is still a really rough design, and maybe i just need to make one or two and post pics when i get done. i think youll get the idea a little better once they are completed
btw, take a look at the ends of the hangers on my dh trucks, and youll understand what i mean...

I'm neither an engineer nor a machinist, but does it make sense to cut a vertical shoulder where the 45deg axle meets the 8mm? That way you've got a face for spacers, speedrings or bearings to ride against ensuring 100% perpendicular alignment?
Skate 'em if you got 'em,

yes, sorry, forgot to mention that, i plan on cutting it at a 45 degree angle, then having it faced square the same size as a speedring/inner race size then turning it down to 8mm, ill see if i can draw a picture later, but yes, it will be perfectly square and perpendicular

No need for pic on my account, but if you need to do it for the CNC tooling have at it.

nah, dont feel like messing with the cnc lathe to be honest, ill just do them by hand and they will come out close if not better than the cnc can do

I'm neither an engineer nor a machinist but I am a slalom racer who is not sponsored by Radikal, or GOG. So if you need some racer input I would be happy to to do some testing for you!

geo,
id love to give you a set along with about 10 other guys, but i just dont have that kind of $$$, im going to bust my ass to have a set ready for the worlds, and would LOVE to have you ride them and tell me what you think, along with anyone else who would like to try them

Re: rear slalom hanger
that's a f*ckin sexy truck, Chris.......the dual bushing seat design in the DH's is novel....and the beveled hanger ends are well thought out......it's a skaters truck...
Is that a standard size baseplate your using?.....or is it slightly longer, like the PVD?
Lastly....I loved reading all the killjoy on an earlier thread about the name....it's your game man, dont let anybody "P.C." you out of your ideas...there's enough political correct b#llsh#t in this country already.....stay punk....shake the foundation

Re: rear slalom hanger
the confederacy was a rebelion, and i think it describes my way of thinking pretty well, all that other bs, was just details
everyone said that i couldnt make my own trucks, i proved them wrong, they said that nobody would like them, other people have proven them wrong, at my first dh race, one racer told me "maybe downhill skateboarding isnt for you," at my last race, i knocked him out in the qualifying heat, he had to sit and watch me race to a top 16 finish, guess what, I PROVED HIM WRONG
ill never let the man rain on my parade, lifes a party, and im bringing the keg.....
thanks for everyones positive, and negative feedback, im trying to make a truck that the skaters are going to want, not what i want. like i said in ohio, i dont race slalom, but i enjoy making trucks, especially when other people like them and want them
as for the size of the baseplate on my dh trucks, the bushing seat closest to the kingpin is actually a "randal compatible" design, it can be run on randal plates, but can only accomidate the single seat. in order for the second seat to work, they have to be used with the v3 baseplates, which ARE a bit longer, and also give you multiple wheelbase options, between the front and back truck, you can adjust your wheelbase up to 3/4" more or less than the bolt holes will allow, while being compatible with both new and old school hole patterns.

Are these having the nuts in the hanger?
