I've been watching a lot of F-1 racing lately. I was hit with the same thought.
I never really ever watched racing until I started racing slalom.

Dude I wish my slalom board was as cool as anF-1 car. On F-1 cars once you just get to the apex of the turn the driver can just gas it and the cars computer does the rest ofthe steering so you technically only have to deal with half of the turn and the cars computer does the rest.

Uhm, no. They have no computer that takes care of any of the driving. Pure skill. Lots of skill!

They used to have really advanced traction control systems, but traction control has been banned, so they slide around a little more than they used to. And don't think for a second that you could ever drive a Formula 1 car even close to respectably fast. Those guys have incredible skill that I could never have. Refer to Top Gear(TV show) to understand why.

I agree to an extent. But there's one major flaw with the analogy. Other riders.
Slalom is perhaps like F1 Qualifying.

The separating line between slalom and DH - is that DH has other riders on the same track at the same time.
Otherwise you could call it mega-slalom, the corners are the gates. It would actually lend itself to different strategy's and skills like drafting, and timing when to draft would go out the window.

Edit.
This is not to say I rate one above the other.

In fact i think mega-slalom would be an awesome discipline, take a tech dh hill and add gates. mmmmm

Ya I saw that episode it was pretty sweet. I know I could never drive an F-1 I'm horrible at driving at speeds and I would probably just #### my pants if I just accelerated in that car. I know those guys are incredibly talented (Refer to the episode of top gear where the F-1 driver drove that little crap car with water and oil on the track and schooled all the other peoples) Sorry for my miss facts I kind of just barfed up what my dad had told me when we were watching a race onetime.
