Default Timing systems

I was just wondering what kind of timing systems you guys used. I've been wanting one for a while now and my dad saud he would either help pay for an affordable one or help me build one. i just wanted to to get some ideas. Extra credit for pics

TrakMate timer (adapted from slot car racing.) $200
spool of cable to connect top and bottom of the courses (usually 1000 feet) $100
TapeSwitch switches for start and finish line (four needed for dual racing) $25 each

Basic setup is about $350 for a single lane and $400 for duals.

It can go up from there with more exotic cabling, infrared beam switches for start and finish, computer interfaces (needing a lap top) and other goodies.

Dan at TrakMate sells a system COMPLETE with everything including the infrared option for $750.00 (no computer.)

There are also various smaller "practice" timers that cost in the $200 to $250 range but I don't know their specifics.
