BIG SECTION OF I-40 CLOSED On The NC/TN Border

It sounds like a huge section of the interstate will be close for "months."

Rockslide on Tennesee-North Carolina Border May Close Interstate 40 for Months

Could be a good opportunity to bomb some of those endless sections of 4% grade through those hills.

(Anyone who hasn't driven I-40 from Asheville to Knoxville hasn't experienced maybe some of the gnarliest grade on the interstate on the East Coast.)

The way I figure it about 25 miles of interstate is closed right at the border. The last North Carolina exit is Cove Creek and then it's 20 miles west to the border (about 17 miles to the rock slide.) The last exit in Tennessee is Hartford and that's five miles east to the border (eight miles to the rock slide.) So I'm assuming traffic has to exit and find another route at those two locations.(This is local traffic. The through traffic on I-40 is having to get off in Asheville and take a detour to hell and back to get to Knoxville.) The only traffic on the road is probably the trucks and front end loaders clearing the debris.

So park the car at either Hartford or Cove Creek and walk up to the interstate.
